MartinThe only one I remember is the one by the council offices down West Paddock, I never actually went in it. Are there any other places for teenagers to hang out in Leyland? Martin In The Pink
AnnMarieMcDonaldI remember Farington Youth Club around 72/73, St Ambroses on a Sunday night, 2 rooms, one for soul and northern, the other for rock!!!, Civic Hall on a Monday night and the Methodist Youth club, I think it was open most nights and had a disco on a Friday night, Steve Plumb and Iain Brewster used to DJ, does anybody know what happened to those two? Ann Marie
MartinHi Anne or is it Anne Marie? I lived a short walk away from St Ambrose for the best part of twenty years and didn't know about the music nights, how long ago was this? Martin In The Pink
juliei remember st ambrose well, they seemed to be big rooms at the time very nosiey.but it was very good, then i moved on to the civic hall where i met my first husband. i also remember the methodist club, was there games table tennis etc julie
AnnMarieMcDonaldHi Martin - it's Ann Marie It was about 26 years ago (god that's frightening!!) so that would be 74/75 - it was a real event every Sunday night. Myself and all my friends used to practice our 'dance steps' to things like Soul City Walking and the Hustle and wear matching outfits!! What can I say - we were young!!! Ann Marie Ann Marie
steve.wi remember the methodist youth club one well, steve plumb i remeber, dave newby used to do a bit too as i recall. i have some pics from the methodist youth club somewhere in the attic i think, can we post pics on here? btw my gran used to run the roebuck for a long time, and my step dad had the chippy in farington ( nr a pub er the ship??) his name was arthur he looked like the lead singer of right said fred!! i can resist everything except temptation
MartinHi Steve, your post made me laugh. I remember the chippy in Farrington, isn't it near the Rose and Crown pub? I thought that chippy was one of the best, seems it went the way of all the others and was taken over. If you want, I can set up a page for local pictures, let me know and I'll work on it. Martin In The Pink
steve.wmartin, thanks for that, yeah thats the chippy. we used to live on kew gardens then, i can rem walking to the chippy every night wi my mum! before that when my gran ran the roebuck we used to sleep above the pub all i rem is the smell of firelighters, that smell still makes me think of the roebuck today. I thiunk my gran may have been responsible for starting the pram race! and im pretty sure my uncle shamed the family by getting disqualified ! i can resist everything except temptation
CarolineI used to go to St. John's Youth Club at Earnshaw Bridge around 1961ish. Run by a rather ineffectual young clergyman, and we weren't allowed music ( ' the Devil's handservant', no doubt!). We had a trip out up Parlick Pike, and he had a mini-breakdown under the duress, we had to practically carry him back down, it was a searingly hot day but he kept his dog-collar on till the last....
katieI used to go to 'Meths' during the week and 'Ambroses' on the weekend - Sunday night I think. There wasn't much for teenagers in the early seventies - in fact, we used to go to the Top Rank in Preston on Saturday mornings for a dance too - remember Gary Glitter and Slade ???
skitzyI can remember going to the Methodist youth club on Friday nights & the parish youth club on Saturday nights around 66/67, then we all used to go to the chippy opposite Westgate. In later years we found ourselves going to the Top rank on Saturday nights, to the little disco at the rear, behind the revolving stage.
LeylandGBMethodist YC on Fridays (followed by visit to Voswins or Lil's as it was better known); Parish (St.Andrew's) on Saturdays.... gee, do I FEEL old now!!!!!!!
Kath smithi used to go to West Paddock(Leyland Youth centre ) on Friday evenings, it was run by Jim green We used to go to the disco on Fridays and sometimes during the week too, about 1979-80. I also went to The Parish on Saturday evening, A guy called Dave ran it I think, we also went to the Lake District for days out and to Altrincham ice rink sometimes.
skitzy When we went to the parish youth club, way back in 67/68 Dave Crossley used to run it, I wonder if it's the same one you knew Kath. Eileen
joyI use to go to the methodist YC, there was a nun called sister olive, we use to make treacle toffee in the kitchens there, one evening taking a batch to be rapped up for selling I accidently sat on them!!!we still went ahead and sold them though.
Kath smithhi skitzy Thats the man, lovely guy. Couldnt remember his surname. My time at Leyland youth clubs was 'ruled' by my first big romance so when we split I stopped going out in Leyland being from Euxton there wasn't a lot to do in the evenings. i hasten to add I was only 15 at the time.
William RThats an "Impressive" tale if I ever heard one. and I do like treacle toffee, good for dentists too (Linda) replacing fillings.Cheers, Bill.
skitzyI remember making treacle toffee at school, but have forgotten how to do it now. If anybody has the recipe, I would love to have another go at making it, I dont think you can buy it here. Eileen
SandiehTreacle Toffee Ingredients 1 lb dark brown sugar, 4 Oz butter, 4 dessert spoonfuls treacle, 4 Tbsp. milk, 2 Tbsp water, Method Melt butter in a pan. Add all other ingredients. Stir only until the sugar dissolves. Do not stir after sugar has dissolved. Turn gas low and allow to boil for about 30 minutes. Test in cold water in a cup until toffee breaks between fingers. Pour into a butter-greased pan. Harden in refrigerator and break into pieces when ready. Enjoy Eileen, think I`ll make some myself.[8D]
ThornleyAnneMarie, I used to go to St Ambroses Sunday Discos too. Mainly in the Soul room but was happy to go between the two rooms. I think my hubby knows Ian Brewster (ex Balshaws if I remember) I will ask if he knows what happened to him. Vanessa
skitzyThanks Sandie Im lookong forward to trying that toffee, Ill make some today. Eileen[:)]
LeylandGBI recall a trip with West Paddock Y.C. some years back where we visited a school in Denmark that was self sufficient - right down to the rickety old buses that they picked us up in, in Holland then drove all the way to Denmark with very few stops. Jim Green was charge, Ann Moore was one of the adults too. What a trip!!! Also learned to drive in the Rose & Crown; well that's where my Dad's instructions always seemed to have us end up!!! He'd have a quick pint then we'd buy supper from the chippy!!
Kath smithIan Clayton taught me to drive, he lived down Fox Lane. When did you all go to the youth clubs? I went about 1978-1980. I'm just glad walls cant talk!!
