Fantastic Leyland Web-site
SpitfireWhilst surfing for info on J Fishwick & Son, I stumbled across a site that is a MUST for anyone interested in Leyland or it`s past. I apolgise to those of you who already know about it and to those who don`t - please have a look - you won`t regret it. http://www.houghton59.fsnet.co.uk/lanes%2009.htm
noelI'd always wondered how Chapel Brow got it's name. That's the site of Peter Houghton Jim, who'se a member of the forum. He holds regular meetings of Leyland Historical Society at Sandy Lane. Well worth a visit to a meeting if you're interested in Leyland's ( and local) history.
SpitfireThanks for the info Noel. I checked the links list before making my posting but didn`t spot the connection with `Leyland Historical Society` as there was no addy given. Anyway, I should have known that such a good site would never have gone un-noitced by others.
noelIt's always worth a look back at the site, there's so much effort Peter has put into it, he deserves a commendation. Thankyou Peter if you are reading this. It's a fabulous website.
skitzyIts a really good slte. Its always good to see photographs of places from your childhood especially when you live far away. What is the old police station used as now? Eileen
Peter119Glad to see that the site is getting viewed all over the world. Please look at the linked site for the museum, where their events are updated as much as i can. Saying this, i am still in the process of sorting two weddings, one in Toronto and one over here a week later in September, plus the setting up of a house and tranportation of loads of stuff from Canada. So please bear with the site updates. Normal service will resume in October Find the home page for the Historical Society site at http://www.houghton59.fsnet.co.uk/Home%20Page.htm All the best Peter Houghton Chairman
MartinHayleys cousin got married in Canada a couple of months ago, then had another celebration in London for all the UK guests. Good luck Peter, Canada looks to be a lovely place to be. Reading this topic again got me thinking about how poorly Leyland has been represented on the internet. That was the main reason for me starting this site. There are a few good sites for the area, but not many... Come on people, give it a go!!!
Alan MarsdenMartin. re your letter of Aug 6 ( our 41st anniversary of wedding), at St Andrews Leyland. Which part of Canada was the wedding you refer to, remember the distances , Manchester to Toronto is roughly the same as Toronto To Vancouver ! Thanks for your work and the site, and when did you live in Leyland? Yes canada is a good place, I can recommend it, in 67 I spent some months as an immigrant in Atlanta Georgia ,I enjoyed it there too but somehow I never felt comfortable. In 73 On my first visit to Toronto and even though it was in the midst of winter, I felt comfortable, the place and people here were much more like the UK. Then came the springtime, the quickest winter to summer transformation in my experience, and the summer was splendid, infact all four seasons are special here and distinct, offering different experiences. I still like visiting the UK, could still enjoy living there, but I doubt if I could afford to do so, I live in Canada,it's a good place! Alan M
MartinI'm not sure of the location of the wedding, but I do know they all had a day out at Niagra falls, so it would have been that part of the country. I lived in Leyland until just over three years ago, when I decided to spread my wings and see what life was like in Somerset. It hasn't been all plain sailing, there have been lots of highs and lows down here. The wages are very poor and house prices are a lot higher than in Lancashire. I might be moving again soon... details to follow.

Back ooop North or staying down there? You moving closer to Hayley?
William RMartin, You could always try Yorkshire. Sorry Linda D. but I was once told that Barnsley was just like Wigan, only a bit "muckier". Its been cleaned up since then. I emigrated here in 1960, and am working up to being accepted as a native soon. William R.
MartinDon't you have to learn the local lingo Bill?
Alan MarsdenMartin, I live in Burlington ,it's 40 min drive to Niagara Falls. Re. your possible next move, Canada is rather good place, especially when selling a property in UK and buying here, and what with Preston Pies now available too !

Aye, so's Wigan! I've dusted off me passport for when I have to show at at the border next Wednesday, Bill. I'll be able to let you know whether the Barnsley Wigan comparison is still valid then. Don't get the best china out - a mug will be fine![;)]
William RAnd here was me thinking they still drank out of "billy cans" in Wigan! Now would it be a pint mug or a half pint? We are going to send you a few instructions for you to get past Immigration, assuming you are using the M62/M1 route. So watch your e-mails. We have tried to organise some decent weather, but who cares? Daughter Joyce (remember) tells me she has been interviewed by the Calendar team and will be "on" at 6-30pm on Monday. (they say) I don`t think you will get that on your side of the hills. More later, Cheers W.R. & L.G.
LDunlop76Billy cans indeed! Don't forget I originally come from Cheshire, where people are fraffly posh! LOL! Calendar is a Yorkshire programme, we don't get it over here..... though if I fiddle with the tuning on the B&W set in the kitchen, I might be able to get a fuzzy version of it. Will experiment later.
Martinohhh Tell us more about this programme Bill. We could do with some famous people on the forum.
William RMartrin, Information only, Daughter Joyce runs the local Toy Library where a number of people hire children`s toys for a nominal sum, particularly Playgroups, and Child Minders. They have recently been given a grant by some Government Scheme (I think) and she has had to state their case. Knowing Calendar, it will have been condensed down to a 15 second slot, for transmission. More later. William R.

Please ask her to hold a big board above her head with "Hello Leyland Forum" so we know which is her. I've seen Hayley's photos but couldn't recognise her last time she was on. [:)] Seriously when are you on Hayley? and what part do you play? I see it's Laura's last appearance tonight on Holby City. What a waste of a young life. [:(]

I think she plays an arm in one scene, you can recognise her by the tattoos...

HayleypinkLOL I dont have any tatoos thank you!
noelLOL it's female fashion to have a tatoo these days . Saw one or two odd ones on holiday, like the young lady with " God's Gift" tattood in Gothic fonts on her derriere ( which was tastefully displayed) I just wondered whether it would look quite so good when that derriere becomes a size 18 rather than size 10.
Hayleypinkexactly - but the point is when the lady gets older she wont be wearing clothes to show off her body so much so it wont matter!!!
Lady GriffinYou should not be looking at ladies' derrieres,Noel. LG

Yes, but she will have snickering young things wiping her bum for her when she goes into the geriatric home - at least they will be snickering when they see her backside described God's gift! [:o)] Read something in the paper the other day about tattoo removal - apparently a lot of those ladies who followed the fashion for having a sun tattoo'd around their navel a few years ago are requesting removal when it doesn't go back into a circle following pregnancy, but is stretched lobsidedly!
