| Martin | I remember the Leyland Tiger
named after the Leyland Tiger bus, it was taken over and turned into a fun bar called The Hippodrome, complete with drag queen dj's and dancing on the bar. It's been empty for a few years now which is a shame becuase I'm sure it would make an ideal restaurant or club, or even community centre.

| JohnH | Hi Sis
Sounds like I should know The Tiger - some memory lurking in the background. Probably one of those disco's you used to go every night! Where abouts at Earnshaw Bridge was it - opposite grans old house at 53. Is the ice-cream shop still there! Surely not!

| Neil | Hi from Canada. When I read the post on the Tiger it certainly brought back a few memories. At one time quite a number of year's ago it use to be a great night out at the Tiger.I can't remmember the owners full name but it was Ronnie something and Wilf was the compare.Great singer.I believe he got killed while travelling abroad.
Talk to you later. Bye Neil.

| JohnH | I'd forgotten about that garden! I'm feeling very nostalgic lately - must be getting old :)

| n/a | Hi I am Jean and I remember the Tiger well as I worked there for a very short time behind the bar. They had a very lively clientele believe me - too lively for me anyway!
I moved to Leyland when I was 6yrs old in October 1955 and I lived there until I got married then went back to Leyland until I got married the second time and now I am moving back inside the next 6 weeks.
Anyone familiar with Bent Bridge? Do any of you remember the old bridge that led down the forty steps from Denford Avenue to Lynton Avenue before the blue / banana bridge was built.

| Martin | I used to work across the road from the Tiger, in a grotty warehouse, or what was left when Earnshaw Bridge Mill burned down. The guy who converted the pub into a fun bar must have spent a fortune on lighting and equipment, I bet it's all down the drain now.

| mossy | to john h the ice cream shop is still there .its still owned by robinsons .
yes i agree that leyland tiger building is an eye sore.if they are,t planning on doing any thing with it then why don,t they just knock it down.i remember when it was that tacky dive called the hipperdrome.violance guaranteed every week.think it got shut down because raz jackson got stabbed outside.

| rocketmanjohn | Before the 'Tiger' was the 'Tiger' it was a pub, I believe it was called 'The Earnshaw Bridge Inn' but I'll stand corrected. The Sub Post Office at Earnshaw Bridge was owned by Jack and Ida Swan, my mum [Molly Burrell nee Mckittrick] ran the Post Office side while Jack and Ida ran the grocers side. It was always very busy, Jack even delivered groceries for free, his Vauxhall Cresta loaded to the gills. My dad and Jack liked to go to the pub on Saturday lunchtimes to wait for my mum to finish work, many is the bag of Smith's crisps and a bottle of Vimto I managed to weedle out of Jack, a really nice and jovial character.
I used to go to school via the 40 steps, just why 40 I don't know because there werent 40. They were stone on one side, and wood on the other. I lived on Balmoral Ave, and it was the quickest way to Balshaws. That, plus the fact that us naughty boy smokers congregrated after school for a quick drag. It avoided the death trap of Bent Bridge, which, oddly, was a favourite spot for railway suicides.
I'll save further memories.

| noel | I used to be a neighbour of Jack Swan's , when he retired if it's the same one, he went to live down Riverside Avenue. Remember the Tiger well though it was a bit too loud for boring me <bg>. Looks rat-infested now, maybe they should make a roundabout or just knock it down.

| Caroline | I was never allowed to go to the Tiger by my parents- because it was Dog Rough! As a child I used to go to the 'sub post office'- I think it was called Daltons Newsagents. There was a special door to the right of the counter ,and shifty-eyed men used to sneak through, you could hear the sound of horse-racing on the radio, and men shouting, it was all a bit frightening; Mum said it was illegal gambling.
Nor was I allowed to go to Rivington Barn on a Saturday night, but was allowed to go to Leyland Public Hall on said evening. This was in the early Beatles era- not that they ever played there, but we did have the sexy 'David John and The Mood' to scream at. It was two-and-six to get in, ( and five bob to get out!!) .
|
| magicman | I remember the Tiger when 'Ronnie' ran it.
I was in my teens and into magic, and he booked me for a week - never went back though! Wonder why ??!!
|
| Thornley | Missed this bit, I posted saying no mention of the Tiger. Ronnie and Jerry Howarth ran the Tiger and my mother worked for them for many years. It used to have a good reputation at one time, people came by the coach load, although there will be those who remember grab a granny night. (Thursdays I think?) I was a little too young to frequent the Tiger but I do remember what a dive the Hypadrome was. I wonder where the people of leyland go now for their evening entertainment.

Youngsters go into the city ( still sounds strange ) Local pubs tend to be dives for the older ones, Capital Centre for cinemas etc.

| kathryn | Re: Ice Cream Place
The Ice Cream shop on Leyland Lane is not owned by Robinsons, and hasn't been for many many years. Mrs Robinson sold it to the Cleggs who still currently own it, they were however asked to keep the name. If you notice the signs, Robinsons name is getting smaller and Cleggs name is getting bigger. Spent many an happy hour at Robinsons since I grew up only two doors away.

| Martin | I went past the old Leyland Tiger site last week. It's now a big block of flats, almost completed. |
| noel | The cheapest is £75k I believe, all that for a view right up Golden Hill Lane. |
| Martin | Who wants to pay 75k for a flat in Leyland? Do these people commute from London? |
| Lady Griffin | Obviously this is going to be a close race between Noel and Martin re postings.
Will watch with interest.

| Martin | I can't see a race...

| LDunlop76 | I'm chasing bronze medal position...... |
| Lady Griffin | I found it so hard to follow the fare system.Tried to go from Manchester to Carlisle and it would have cost an arm and a leg.
It is bewildering to work out all the different rail companies involved especially as a visitor. So many varied prices depending on booking times etc.
One line here from North to South-so much easier.
You either go up the line or down it.
LG |
| littlerosie | Leyland is a vibrant, growing community now, and very popular indeed. £75K is a good price for those new flats. OK the view might not be the best, but for sheer convenience they will sell well. There are hundreds and hundreds of new houses being built in and around Leyland, and all are in demand. What about the thousands to be built on the old ROF site? They will all sell, make no mistake. |
| Lady Griffin | Never take the third runner for granted. You're carrying all our hopes LD.Women can do anything!
Loooooove the pictures.

| Kath smith | Went to Romsey in Hampshire last year, a 3 bed terrace(sorry town house) was £400,000. nice place but nearly half a million for a terrace?
I know what you mean for a view up Golden Hill though.
My friend paid £70,000 for a semi last year in Leyland, she's made £50,000 on it already. By the way Martin its £40 for a cheap train ticket to London from Preston now-must earn good money to comute!
Heard about someone paying £90 to get out of Leyland to London too but thats another story. |

If you book in advance you can get to London from Wigan for £11 - Preston is the next station up the line so it's a quid or two dearer from there. But the cheapest seats go very quickly. I had to go to London 3 weeks ago. I booked at Easter and could only get the cheapest rate outbound - coming home it was £20-something cos the cheap tickets had sold out. But had I bought my ticket on the day, it would have cost over £100 return to London! |
| Caroline | As we now have English telly, I'm aware of the obscene prices houses are going for! Houses here have gone up, especially the ones which appeal to the English, but are still around a fifth the price.
|
| Martin | £11 is cheap for a train ticket Linda! I used to get the Apex returns for £25.00 from Preston many years ago, I imagine they are much more than that now. There is a line from Bristol to London and that's about £40.00. No wonder the trains are losing business. I would use public transport a lot more but for the price. |
| noel | My sister bought a rail pass. She would have paid over £50 to get here from Euston to Preston a couple of weeks ago( she stayed overnight with me as it was my aunt's funeral the following day)
Because she got a rail pass the cost was reduced to £38 with a seat reserved. |

You only get that sort of fare by booking at least 4 weeks in advance, Martin. I found it was actually cheaper to book 2 single tickets than 2 return - a bit of experimentation on Virgin's online booking service can throw up some bargains. But I reckon if you can't book in advance, you're forced into hefty fares. [V] |
| LDunlop76 | Errrr, that should have read cheaper to book 2 singles than ONE return! Here's me talking daft and I hadn't even had a drink! LOL! |
| dampslad | Thought the old Tiger was being knocked down and flats built on the site by the firm which was going to move into the old BTR Social Club as its HQ. My cousin Christine's son, Paul Rowley, is a partner in the firm, but I can't for the life of me remember its name (Rowland Homes?).
Perhaps the scheme has fallen through for some reason.

| Hayleypink | Oh Plymouth - another South Westerner on the forum!!!You are further than Martin is though - he living in Weston Super Mare at the Mo. |
| Martin | The flats were almost complete on the old Tiger site when I was in Leyland the other month. I'm not sure what's happening to the BTR club since it caught fire. |
