Martin

| LDunlop76 | If building has already started, very quickly..... if Wigan is anything to go by!
|
| Martin | That's good, I miss shopping at Foodgiant, sad but true. It was a cheap and cheerful place that didn't take itself at all seriously.

| Martin | I had a quick drive around the Tescos building site today, before setting off back to Somerset. It's certainly Leylands largest supermarket. I heard they are having a 24 hour petrol station across the road nera the baths.

29th of July I have been told.
|
| Martin | FOUND IT!
In The Pink |
| noel | Tins of food have started appearing on the shelves at Tesco. I am going to take some more photos Martin and send them to you if that's OK as it looks a lot more like a store now.I'll trim the size by taking low quality shots to speed up the transfer. Official opening is next week sometime.

| Caroline | My Mum and Dad can now see a bit of Tesco's over their high garden wall, they're wondering what will happen to local businesses, tho' I expect they'll use it, as they're decrepit and live round the corner..
|
| Martin | The excitement is getting too much for me
I can put some more pictures in the tescos page if you send them to me.

OOO innit exciting Martin, I have a few of L&B being demolished as well, though not the frontage The big 4 storey building behind Fishwicks looks like it's been sawed in 2 . It will probably be recognised better when the frontage onto Golden Hill starts getting knocked down. I'll nip out tomorrow and take a few of Tescos then post them on to you.
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| noel | I took a few more photos this morning. It is a lovely sunny day so they don't look quite as gloomy. The problem is getting all of the site in as I have a basic digital camera and could do with a wide angled lens as I couldn't get far enough back ( because of other buildings in the way) to get a full picture.

| LDunlop76 | My local Sainsbury's shuts for 8 days as from next Wed for refurbishment. Should I venture out to the new Tescos in Leyland in the interim? Is it still opening on 29th?
|
| Martin | Go for it Linda, you can be our roving reporter!!!
I was going to upload Noels pics today but I'm having problems with the Hosts again! I think they have gone on hols cause they haven't answered any of my email all weekend. I'm looking at changing to a more reliable and faster hosting company soon (funds permitting) so watch this space.

I'm not right sure Linda ( gawd that were a bit o' lanky) It looks imminent, I'll keep you in touch either through the forum or e-mail
Poor old Sainsburys will miss out on my custom.
Martin, it is a slow web site is it? I thought it was just my over-loaded PC . I sometimes have to log off and log on again to speed things up.
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| Caroline | Noel, you can always scan the Tesco site, taking several shots which can be stuck together, quite fun, too as you sometimes get the same person on several times! Linda, it would be good fun to go and see it- a daft reason to go to Leyland's as good as any! Wish I was going meself, I wonder of the opening'll be like the one in Billy Liar, 1960's and the onset of Supermarkets- in it, a TV Personality opens the store and there are Girl Pipers let loose , bagpiping up the aisles, pretty impressive!

Martin started this one off . ( look how drab his sig was then compared to now, but I'm beginning to work out how to do it Martin, and I'm working on my own ( lord give me strength)
MONDAY 8AM Tescos is being opened by the mayor of South Ribble. A bit disappoint I was hoping somebody famous would open it but I suppose South Ribble have been instrumental in bring jobs to the town, I have just had a brochure of their offers , spend £40 €53 and you get 5p off a litre of petrol, TVs £70 off 28" Bush Colur for £199, smaller ones <£50 . Next week a celebrity chef is coming and the week after Jason Robinson England international .

Noel, there is a new version of this forum being released soon, one of the new features will be dynamic signatures. In other words your all your postings will update to your current sig.

Looks like I won't be able to get there. My wife needs the car forthe next fortnight so I have to either walk or cycle the 2 miles to work. I'll try and get something even if it's only a scan or a link . Video's out of my league I'm afraid, I only recently worked out how to switch me PC on!!!
Does the new software mean it will be more user friendly in terms of inserting images Martin?
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| Caroline | I thought they might 've got someone famous in, as well, I still have my children's signed photos of Geoff Capes that they got when 'Carrefour' opened - they used to do things in real style in them days!
|
| noel | I've taken some more pics when I used the 24 hours filling station tonight. It's one of those new-fangled things where you putyour credit card in a slot and it takes the money out automatically. Took me 15 minutes to explain I wanted to pay cash, and next time I'd go back to Sainsbury's for my petrol
Had a debate with the attendant about having nobody important to open it, apparently it's now going to be opened jointly by the old Tesco store's ex-manager. wowee.
Sent the pics to Martin, hope he has time to put them on the web site.
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| noel | Well I tried to get near to the Tesco opening today, but the whole town was grid-locked.
Work colleagues tried later at lunch time to get in but still the traffic was horrendous.
I'm afraid I thought it might be. Back to the drawing board?
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| Caroline | My Mum said Dad couldn't get his pension because of the traffic! Also that ' They've been crowing about creating 400 jobs, and have taken on long- term unemployed and trained them up at Runshaw college..' And the lights are on all night! What I want to know is, when will these old people do their shopping, because Tesco's is open all night, and they used to go ' First Thing', well, is that now at 1 in the morning, or is that still ' Last Thing at Night' ? And when's the changeover when Late becomes Early???
|
| Thornley | Hi all, I've been quiet for a while so I thought I'd put me tuppence worth in tonight. My parents went to Tesco's on Monday " the best thing thats happened to Leyland in a long time" was their opinion. They apparently have the best fish ever!!!!!!!!! I may try and do a shop there this week, I'm an Asda girl myself but you never know the change may do me good!
I will be interested to see the area, I always loved the area around the Cross. It was my favorite area in Leyland. Was it Warren and Wignalls auction house there, I remember the building but not who owned it?

Hey up lass, good to hear from you again. I do belive it was Warren and Wignalls, now down at Earnshaw Bridge Mill of course.
I went last night to Tescos, first time. It was a great feeling coming out at 9pm with the church in full view and the Cross looking magnificent . Good to see this notorious end of Leyland busy . Saw a few of my ex-workmates who lost their jobs when L&B shut down. One was serving on the deli stall and one stacking some of the shelves.
Glad they got new jobs.
As you reported, "best thing to happen to Leyland"

| LDunlop76 | Our Sainsbury's re-opened on Thursday, restyled as a "SavaCentre". Hmmmm. Didn't like it! The new areas are a small selection of clothes and electrical goods and a Blockbuster video rental outlet. Everything has been moved around, the shelves are higher (giving a claustrophobic feel and discriminating against short-*rses like me) and they've introduced muzak. Grrrrrr! The reason I liked the old shop was that they didn't have inane music blaring out!
<~~stomps off in a sulk!
|
| noel | Get rid of that music , complain about it. The Sainsbury I visit at Cuerden was refurbished 18 months ago. I definitely hated the changes at first but despite Tesco it's still going to be our No.1 as you rapidly get used to the new things. But music? no.no.no.
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| LDunlop76 | quote:

I think I will, Noel! Apart from the music, I dislike the way the new layout is geared to the "drop-in evening trade" - the beer, wine, ready meals and so on are close to the entrance and the basket-only tills. Fine if you're dashing in for a last minute meal, but not so good for the big shop....... or if you've got kids, as the pop section is at the far end of the store! I suppose I'll get used to the new arrangement eventually..... about a week before they muck it about again! LOL!!!
|
| Thornley | Hi All, well I tried the new Tesco but I'm not over keen. I think probably I am just used to where everything is in Asda. I will say that that area of town does look much better now. It disorientated me a little but once I located the cross I was fine. I did not realise that it would take up all that space!
|
| noel | I must admit I'm not keen either, there again I don't like ASDA. I think you just get used to where you shop and any changes take a while to register. People say Sainsbury's is expensive but they have so many offers on I don't find it so.
I went into Tescos yesterday afternoon, lovely hot day , left the roof open while I went in. Started pouring down for about 20 minutes. Got home with a very wet botty.

| noel | I managed to get 2 shots of Tescos I sent to Martin to upload .
I've fallen out with the shop already I'm afraid. Don't like the lay-out, it's always packed and I prefer Sainsburys anyway ( I do all the shopping in our house, it saves arguements )
I will only use Tescos when other stores are shut. The traffic in Towngate is horrendous now. I think the lights on the corner of Eden St. need replacing by a mini-roundabout to ease the flow.

Dear me mossy have you been drinking? I agree with everything you say, I hate the place. I took the photos for the benefit of those people who can't see the site, Lady G in New Zealand , Frank John Noel in the states, Doreen in Australia and sorry if I missed anybody.
My shopping is Sainsburys I made that clear ages ago. I think Tesco is the most significant development for decades. That doesn't make it a good thing.

| Lady Griffin | Tnanks so much for the photos of Tescos Noel as I definitely want to be able to find the place when I next visit Leyland.Sounds like it can't be missed.
The supermarkets here are raving on about their trolleys going missing -they end up in strange places and most rust away in the local creek. As yet there is an honesty system and plenty of warnings that Trolleys must not be taken away on pain of death------but of course they are.
One local chap who has property in the Waitakeres has found over a hundred ancient ones dumped in the valley near his home-all with the front wheels missing.
Do Tescos trolleys go AWOL?

That was the reason I took the photos LG so that those in foreign lands could view it . The trolleys have a mechanism in the wheels that lock up once the trolleys go off the site. My son tried it to check out the validity of the posters warning people. They did. You'd have to carry the trolley to get it off the site. I called in late one night last week in an emergency. Sorry still don't like it.

| Caroline | Back at Tescos, brandishing a trolley..
I had a good look round when stood in the car park there for the first time last month. Tescos makes nonesense of the original town street plan! And since then I've thought " why are there listed protected buildings but never listed road systems? " When one thinks, the streets and roads are ancient trackways which are in fact much much older and existed before most of the buildings!!! So why don't we look after them as well?? |
| skitzy | I am trying to view the photo's of Tesco, but i'm not having any luck. Was Tesco built on the Carrefour/Mainstop site? What has been built on the public hall site?

Tesco's was built on the land adjacent to the old library/Royal Navy club and extends as far as the chemists shop near the cross, and back towards Eden St . The car park runs down to where the swimming baths are. I think that's what the public hall became, part of the car park. I think Martin may have removed my photos of Tesco's being built. I'll send you one Sandie next time I go there . |
| skitzy | Thanks Noel, it sounds pretty big. Last time we went to the UK, relatives took us over to the big centre at Manchester, it's fantastic. We haven't got anything that big in Brisbane.

A good point, Caroline. I saw an interesting TV programme about York which mentioned that the buildings have retained the original dimensions from the Viking street plan. When an old building either fell down or was demolished, the new build over the top kept to the same size as the original Viking plot. I would imagine this is probably the case for other old towns too - Chester springs to mind. So in places like that, the old streets are maintained.
But in other towns buildings and the streets they were on have been swept aside for road widening schemes and new routes. We can't hold back progress, but it might be nice to see some of the old thoroughfares retained. |
| Spitfire | Lesley, What you say about holding back progress is very true, however it`s a two edged sword. Given the choice of losing some old roads (together with 20 years of boarded up dereliction, the old Co-Op being a prime example) in exchange for the Tesco development, I know which I`d vote for. |
| noel | quote: Originally posted by skitzy

Apology accepted, Jim!
I take your point about knocking down derelict streets to create new road schemes, but sometimes planners seem to do it just on a whim. Take the Town Hall area of St Helens - the entire road scheme of the area was rehashed purely in order to create a piazza-style space in front of the Town Hall. All well and good and it would be lovely if it was being used for street theatre or similar, but it's not used for anything except the Remembrance Day service once a year and in the meantime a journey of 100 yards now necessitates a 10 minute detour around the town because there's no connection between the two halves of Corporation Street! |
| Alan Marsden | Noel, where can I find the pictures that you took of the new Tesco shop ?
Is it where the CO-Op was , near the cross ?

Yes Alan, it's between the old library (think that's called Eden St.) and Church Road. I promised Sandie I'd send her a photo so if your e-mail address is in the members listings I'll send you a couple as well. |
| Caroline | This is the reason it's so difficult to find your way round 'improved ' town centres, on foot the street systems are irrational and, by car, one way streets confuse the brain- well, mine anyhow!
Perhaps why I live somewhere with one road... |
