| Martin | quote: FIERCE storms may be to blame after a tree fell onto a car in Preston, injuring five people.
A Ford Probe was being driven along Black Bull Lane at around 8.40pm on Sunday, August 10, when the large tree collapsed onto the car.

Storms? We haven't had a break to the hot weather down here in Somerset for a while now. It is very slightly cooler then last week but not much...
|
| LDunlop76 | Heavy thunderstorm here around 8.30am Sunday morning, followed by another one later in the morning when the sky went almost as dark as night. We've had very heavy rain and localised flooding. The temps here are in the 20's now, no more heatwave! |
| Martin | That's a bit hard to imagine where I am right now Linda. |
| Lady Griffin | Funnily enough no thunderstorms in Barnsley.
LG |
| Caroline | The storms keep missing us here, we could do with a wet! |
| LDunlop76 | The storms seem to have travelled fairly slowly. I spoke to my dad on Sunday morning and the storm we had here at 8.30am was only just reaching South Manchester (25 miles away) at 11am - they'd had glorious sunshine until then. At this rate it should reach Barnsley any minute now, and you, Martin, about the middle of next week? LOL! |
| Lady Griffin | 10.30 AM in Barnsley and still brilliant sunshine.Hope the weather holds for a weekend in the Lake District where if memory serves me right it always tends toward precipitation.I was going to write that differently as in p........ down but changed my mind.

| LDunlop76 | You mean pUddling down, Lady G? <cheeky grin> |
| anacortesdamp | Do you remember the "Rhyming Weather Forecast" on the "Two Ronnies"?
"It will be cool in Goole, dry in Rye, rather hot in Aldershot, and if you're going to be in Lissingdown, you should take an umbrella."

We were in a caravan at Leisure Lakes (Mere Brow) when it hit - kids and wife not impressed [V] |
| rocketmanjohn | We're in the typical summer weather pattern here, incredibly hot every day with heavy thunderstorms most afternoons, which cool it off a bit, we've had over 7" of rain this week. We like to sit and watch the storms on the patio, until they get too close. The power goes off regularly, and when it does'nt, the TV looses the satellite signal. I don't use the computer during the storms because of power surges, even though I've got a surge protector. I've blown one already last year. Does anyone know why some lightning is pink, and some blue? We've had mid 90's for 4 months now, and it's never been below 80, even at night. Roll on winter.

| anacortesdamp | What we like about the Pacific Northwest is the lack of humidity. We've had 50 days now with highs above 70F, but the humidity is down around 30 percent. Our overnight lows are about 45F.
In July, we had 0.06 inches of precipitation, rather than the typical 0.75 inches. The negative is the number of forest fires. Although Washington State has not done too badly, British Columbia has had a hell of a time. Kelowna (about 180 miles east of Vancouver) had over 300 homes destroyed and 30,000 people displaced.
My cousin from the UK visited us in early August and we went to the Abbotsford Airshow. Four times during the show, activities were suspended while a couple of DC-6 water bombers departed to go drop water and retardant on the fires.
I'm kinda glad we live at sea level and less than 100 feet from salt water!

| Karen | Hi Frank,
We are in the same time zone ... I am at the moment staying with my daughter in Vancouver.
My place is in the Cariboo ... we have been lucky so far , the closest fire is 30 miles away.
I was at my husband Geoff's, Auntie Annie Robinson's 90th birthday party in Canberra Rd. last year and spent some time talking to your Aunt .. she is a friend of Annie and I think they both still belong to Turpin Green Methodist Chapel.
The Minister was a guest too.
Ciao Karen Bretherton.

| magicman | Karen - are you related to the Leyland Brethertons that ran the funeral business !!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Karen | Nope ...different mob, Noel.
Geoff's family were poultry breaders on Leyland Lane.
'Bretherton's Pedigree Chicks'!!
Ciao Karen. |
| magicman | Ho hum - worth a try.
Not sure I remember those chicks of pedigree, must have been t'other end of Leyland Lane. |
| Karen | Two farms
Rosehill Farm ... corner of Altcar Lane and Leyland Lane .......
Brookfold farm ... across the road just about opposite to Altcar Lane.
I would say 1/2 way from Seven Stars to the garage on
Southport Road, which is owned by Geoff's brother in law ...
Harry Ruttle.
We used to ride around in a green Austin van with ...
'Bretherton's Pedigree Chicks' emblazoned in gold down both sides!!
No prizes for guessing the kind of teasing and rude remarks we endured!!!
Ciao Karen .. 'The Pedigree Chick'

On holiday we saw a sign for "Babcock's chicks - make great layers. Book your Babcock's chicks here" which gave rise to a chuckle or two. [:o)] |
| Karen | Thank goodness ... my father in law didn't think of that one!!!!
K. |
| magicman | Yup, I remember the farms from the road - they were the 'other end' of Leyland Lane. Well, well, well .. the world gets smaller by the minute. |
| Lady Griffin | I remember the van well Karen and the area where the farms were-small world indeed!

Absolutely agree and I just hope those who thought it was an unfriendly forum all realise that there is no clique . It's like the saying you have to be in it to win it. Stick your oar in and you'll get a response. It's good to see a few more regulars now. Keep it up folks. |
| Lady Griffin | Well I do try to keep up but I have to wait my turn on the computer![8D]
