| Martin | Has anyone seen the new Star Wars film yet?
We might be going to the cinema this weekend if we have enough time. I've heard it is a lot better than episode one.

| JohnH | The new episodes may have the edge on effects - but they'll never better the original trilogy. They're the sort of films that stay with you forever (assuming you're a sci fi nut of course |
| Lady Griffin | Just thought I would add my ha'porth to this topic as have been thinking lately that I should start going to the cinema again but what to see! There's the question. Recently there's been a documentary on the film industry shown on one of the minor TV channels in NZ which covered film from the silents to modern day Silence of the Lambs type films. Started me thinking if -technology advances aside-films are really that much more enjoyable and indeed if the stories are better. The acting would have to be better,I grant you.I feel fortunate to have experienced the real thrill of sitting on a hard seat on a Saturday afternoon roaring and shouting 'put a penny in the gas 'when the reels stopped ,and blinking through the haze of thick cigarette smoke. We knew every one of those Hollywood stars and belonged to fan clubs writing away to film studios for autographed photos. Flash Gordon would have been one of the forerunners of the modern sci fi films with plenty of villains to hiss at.The mud men always fascinated me.Shots like the parting at the end of 'Casablanca' repeated in the departure of of ET.Rehashed ideas over the years. Those were the days of a different cinema in Preston every night of the week and the continuous showings at the New Victoria on a cold day. Not many films I see previewed now really appeal- lots of gratuitous violence or sex and thin storylines.Films adapted from books always seem to me to be preferable for the reason the story is there. The story was there for Titanic too but I found it boring.Shakespeare in Love was a major disappointment. Somebody tell me what is a good film.I fancy seeing 'Enigma'which is showing locally here next week since it is based on fact and the breaking of the enigma code. Then again it may be ruined by lots of syrupy romance. I guess we can all wait for the video and rewind if we don't like what's there. Look forward to hearing some recommendations. |
| Lady Griffin | Just thought I would resurrect this topic as have been watching a few videos lately while the rain has come down in torrents and my sister is with me. Am rather bemused as to the language which seems to be so acceptable these days. Out of 10 videos not one was without liberal use of the infamous word. Why is it necessary to spoil an otherwise good story with this sort of language. Thought I would enjoy Bridget Jones'Diary and Erin Brokovich ,which I did.Certainly loved Billy Elliot, but I HATE hearing foul words especially from the mouths of women. Is it really so commonly in use now in everyday conversation by the majority. From Miss Prude aka LG aka Linda |
| Hayleypink | well over xmas i hope to see Chicago! |
| Lady Griffin | Well-Lord of the Rings Part 2 The Two Towers has just premiered in Wellington which has been tranformed into Middle Earth for the occasion. The Hobbits are in town with a vengeance.Have only seen previews but it looks like a modern version of Roy Rogers and the Posse on a huge scale. You Pratchett fans would probably love it. |
| Martin | Me and Hayley can't wait |
| Hayleypink | I can for lord of the rings. cant wait for martin xx |
| William R | Lady Griffin, Just seen your posting of August 17th on bad language amongst other things. The local buses here are now carrying posters which say " Carol Singers coming, turn off the lights and don`t answer the door" This could be a joke if it wasn`t so serious. Carol singing is now a kind of blackmail, listen to the obscenities before the angelic voices strike up, then dare not to subscribe. Prepare for the question "Is that all?" then hear the retreat into the street and wonder if your house is going to be the one to have burning paper pushed through your letter box, or your car vandalised. Areas in this town are now closed to the Police, after they were attacked and police dogs attacked. The language today from students from the Grammar schools would make the average coal miner think he has been in a sheltered occupation. School uniform is to see how short skirts can be worn, how unkempt their appearance. They walk down the middle of the roads stopping traffic, kicking at the doors of any who object. The town is a no-go area after 8-00pm, taxi drivers must be paid before they accept a fare because of runners. All the shops have heavy shutters over their windows for security, welcome to Christmas 2002 and a Happy New Year. Well, they are only children, aren`t they? Oh, I haven`t mentioned the shop lifting gangs or the drug question, because thats so much the accepted thing nowadays isn`t it. William R. |

| LDunlop76 | quote:LOL!! She lets me in, so I guess not! I have to admit that I am guilty of being foul-mouthed at times - comes of working in the NHS - we have patients would make a saint swear! [:I] But at least we keep it behind the scenes and not in front of Joe Public! Heard an interesting debate on the radio the other week about how there are always taboo words, but how they change over time. 150 years ago use of "damn" would cause shock and perturbation, where it's scarcely noticed these days. The presenter said he felt the F word would go the same way, where as words used widely (if insultingly) 50 years ago such as "nigger" are now cause for shock and will become more so. |
