| Potental publication? |
| Caroline | Just a suggestion- there are some excellent bits of entertaining and interesting writing in the forum, wouldn't selected pieces make a good book, if anyone has the time and interest, and should there be a need for any illustrations alongside photos...think of me!it would really be a change from the worthy but rather dry publications about old towns, or those ' twanky lanky' books by rambling old northerners. What does anyone think, and is anyone fool enough to take it on?
|
| Lady Griffin | This is an excellent idea apart from the millions the publication may generate.
Something along the lines of Thoughts From Another Forum.Or ??????That's a start .Title ????
Am too ancient to take it on but do like the idea.

| Lady Griffin | The more I think about this the more feasible it sounds.
Would it be something like snippets under various topics headings.
So you need not only a good appropriate title but some idea of format, then simply collect the possible inclusions ready for editing, legalising and illustrating.
A friendly and cheap publisher and away you go.
Don't mind doing my bit if necessary.Don't be too long though.

| Martin | It's a good idea, piecing it all together would be quite a challenge... Are there any writers/publishers out there?

| Lady Griffin | Am currently looking at A History of Lostock Hall- Tardy Gate including Farington from the 11th century to the 20th compiled by Jackie Stuart sales donated to St Catherine's Hospice and Lostock Hall Primary School.History but anecdotal-if you haven't got this Noel you would enjoy reading it.
Will bring it with me when I come over if you can't get a copy.
The reason I mention it is the binding and compilation which has been done I think on a photocopier with a sturdy binding strip.
Maybe food for thought in future discussions re Caroline's suggestion.
I would love to get hold of A History of Walton Le Dale and Bamber Bridge.Dr David Hunt.Does anyone know if it's still available for sale.

I have read a recent history of Lostock Hall and Tardy Gate, LG but it only goes back about 2 centuries and I have forgotten who the author was though she is local obviously and very much alive still. It sounds like the binding on your older history is very similar to that book's binding. I do have access to reasonably sophisticated photo-copiers etc. at work, but that does not mean I am volunteering as artistic I certainly am not. I will have a look for the book, it will be on sale in the St. Catherine's shop probably or maybe local library. If I can find anything about the Walton-Le-Dale book I willlet you know.

| LDunlop76 | Having seen a much loved forum snatched away and all its carefully considered postings lost (Martin knows what I'm on about - we were both regulars there), it would be nice to have the best bits of this one preserved for posterity, but who has the time to devote to it? I'm afraid I don't. Any takers?

Having thought about it Carolyn. I will look back over old posts and copy and paste interesting items into Microsoft Word since that is probably the most commonly used WP. Once I have done that help!!!!

| Lady Griffin | The booklet on Lostock hall sounds as if it could be the same Noel. There are pepperings of references to early history and through to the recent present. But it is readable.
I did have a good collection of books lent some years ago to a friend of my husband who has promised to get them back to me----as he was just departing on a band trip around Europe.I know he will but when!
When my sister goes back I'll have more time to do some copying etc.
My expertise with the computer is the sticking point but the material in postings piles up so quickly it could become unmanageable if left.I only need to be told what to do!!!!!!!

I've done some copying Lady G. Maybe I could post some privately to you and try and do it as a joint venture with others adding as they are prepared to.
It will keep me out of mischief for a while. I'm not too hotwith this Microsoft thing though my wife is quite good as it's her job at the council ( when she's not gadding about with little boys in short trousers

| Caroline | I'm virtually computer illiterate, and I'm sorry one of my words had to be censored, I didn't even know it was swearing, though it mean't twee and swanky or summat... might it be a good idea to see who publishes this sort of stuff? Is there any thing like the equivalent of the Westmorland Press around Preston? ' In my dreams ' I'd sort of imagined a fairly professional publication, the contents being sent to publisher's who'd set it all out.....my partner's good at desktop publication, perhaps if we could all agree on a suitable excerpt, I could illustrate this and we could set out a page ; Anyway, when you send off to publishers you usually just give them a taster first- it would perhaps be fun to see how it could look, for starters, and then see how it goes, as it could be a bit frightening to think of all the work entailed. It's a good start, Noel, picking out some choice bits........
|
| Lady Griffin | Am sure in any publication of whatever standard the more professional the better there would be wonderful scope for illustrations,Caroline, like a daffodil flying or the ghostly chap leaning on the bar of the local, Ancient Romans careering down the hill in a home -made chariot.
Photos of Neddy Springs etc.
I got a bit lost in your censored word so will have to re-read the posts .Am sure it would be mild.It was very daring to see"Clochemerle" at the flicks in the 50's but a good laugh even though the French was a bit too fast for yours truly but I do remember hearing that word-many times.Such a delightful verbal vision of the scene from your window.
LG aka Linda
|
| Caroline | I'm still considering this.....but someone I know who works in Museum services said that not everything should be archived, and perhaps all such stuff could be thought of as ephemeral, like a good chat in the pub-I'm not quite convinced though.
|
| Hayleypink | You can publish book son the net...
But hey this forum is like a book - new chapters and characters...
Sorry I havent been on here much but I am back to say hi and support my lovely Martin!!

| Caroline | I expect I brought up this subject because I don't yet trust modern technology, a book in the hand seems far surer than millions of words floating round in the ether, to expose my simplistic view to the ridicule of others. But, yes, you're right, Hayley, it IS like a book, and that's a nice thought. Publishing on the net has already helped a lot of people get into print, I heard, as publishers read them because some selection process has already taken place.

| Martin | Awwwww Thank you Hayley...

My mind keeps going back to this original posting. Now that we have more features on this forum, I was thinking about starting an A to Z of Leyland, or maybe an encyclopaedia of the town. I can set this up as a new category, which can be accessed by using the drop down menu found under the Leyland Town Forum logo, on the main page.
I will set the new Category up now and we can have a play with it.
Let me know what you think.
|
| Caroline | Sounds good, and I like the quick reply facility! The drop down menu thing will help find who was talking about what and where.. |
| Martin | You'd better as The Boss Noel... She can tell you all about being a Pink |
| noel | We are getting masses and masses of good information now for any potential publication. I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with it all do we proceed or not? I thik I need a quid pro quo as Johnny Downer once said. ( A quid for the pro was his translation) A lot of this could be used by the historical society. Think Peter mentioned that in his news letter. |
| Caroline | What we need is some dedicated person to spend a lot of spare time collating the most interesting, and entertaining, stuff, don't we ? But we're all so busy. There's a lot of information which shouldn't go to waste....... is anyone about to retire soon? Or can we get Funding for someone to do this? There's brass out there for Local Initiative , Heritage, etc. |
| noel | I am trying to download as much as I can but don't want to replicate work unnecessarily . What does Martin in the Pink mean Martin? There's Hayley in the Pink amd a whole lot of pink things on her web site. |
| Peter119 | Hi All
I have already mentioned publication of some of the articles written by Bill and Colin directly to them. Any items of historical interest on the forum, the society would be happy to publish in their annual publication, the Lailand Chronicle.
If any members of the forum would like to buy the current edition at 1.50 or previous editions at 25p an issue, please contact me by email.
If you would like to be put on our bi monthly newsletter email, let me know too.
