| Hayleypink | What about a Forum Meet? Me and Martin will be in Leyland 28th dec 02 - 3rd jan 03 - wanna meet up? be nice to see you all.
and if anyone knows any good pubs with music for new years eve let me know! |
| Lady Griffin | Hi all
Will be with you in spirit on New Years Eve-hope you manage to get together for a forum happening over yuletide.
As a kid I remember listening for the foghorns and ship's hooters from the river, which sounded so loud on a freezing night at the stroke of midnight- and the bells -plus dad having to go out the back door and come back in with his piece of coal through the front one.
Don't think that was a Lancashire thing but he did it anyway.
Wouldn't venture out on New Years Eve these days-too many hooligans around.
Linda

Good idea Hayley. Count me and Margaret in . |
| Martin | We can sort out a venue to meet at over the christmas period. Some where like the Eagle, not too loud or busy. |
| brian | Evening all,
I would be interested in the meet over Christmas and the New Year if we can arrange a suitable time and place. Would we need to wear a carnation in our buttonhole so that we could recognise each other?
Regards to all,
Brian |
| Thornley | Hi All, you can count me and hubby in too. It would be interesting to meet everyone.
Vanessa |
| Peter119 | Hi All
If you are feeling fit, on Tuesday 31st December at 1.00 pm, the Leyland Historical Society is having a special meeting at the Museum for a guided tour around the Museum by Dr David Hunt and if there is time and the weather is good enough, a walk around the heritage walk.
The Society thought that this would be a good way to show support for the Museum as it is currently under review by South Ribble.
The forum meeting sounds a great idea, count me in

No use asking me where to go for New Year's Eve - this saddo has only ever been out once on New Year's Eve [:(] |
| noel | I'm free virtually any night except New Year's Eve. There again I never know when we are suddenly called on to baby sit. So any night 'cept 31st. |
| Hayleypink | [:0]
Linda, me neither really....but hopefully I will persuade Martin to take me out New Years Eve to a little Club somewhere...I mean there must be one in Preston! I haven't been for a dance for ages.
OK so now we have 28th, 30th or 1st.....(so Linda can come)
Ok so votes now for 28th, 30th or 1st - speak now!!
And also - where do people wnat to meet? Suggestions please!
|
| noel | I'll try and get Stuart to come Brian and maybe my wife Margaret who used to play with your mob when she was little. ( or so she says) |

If you know where St Andrew's Church is Linda, The Eagle and Child ( a favourite haunt of all ex-Balshavians) is about 100 yards away heading up Church Lane away from the Cross . A simple route, get to Tesco's and you can see the Leyland Cross and the Church from the car park.
Oh, Noel! The nearest I have been to Leyland is Junction 28 on the M6! However, so long as I know it's on Church Lane, I'm sure I can find the pub. Multimap.com rarely lets me down! Thanks for the directions!
(I was close on Monday - had to go on a course at Preston Postgrad Medical Centre - was amazed to find the parking for the post-grad unit is free!) |
| Thornley | Hi All, unfortunatly I will be working on this date!!! So will not be able to met up. Hope you all have a great time and have a drink for me.
Vanessa |
| Hayleypink | linda, maybe noel or martin can help you out with directions....they assume everyone knows leyland! |
| Lady Griffin | Thanks Bill.
Will do likewise for absent friends.

It's OK, Hayley - Noel posted pretty good directions and I can find Church Lane on the net.
Awww, Vanessa, shame you can't make it - maybe next time? |

Thank you, Peter! You going to be there on 31st? |
| Peter119 | Well, i'm hoping to be. Though whether it will be in my offical capacity as Leyland Historical Society chairman, as the museum visit and walk was my idea to show my future wife the historical part of Leyland in company with Dr David Hunt from the Museum. I should say she is coming over from Toronto for her first visit next weekend, before she moves over here next year.

Awww, how romantic! I hope Leyland is looking its best for her. |
| Caroline | I'll be with you in spirit, too, I'm fed up I can't be there, the Eagle's my old stomping ground an' all! We go back to France on the 22nd. December..... back in April, tho', when Linda's over, if I remember rightly. |
| Lady Griffin | Busy raiding money boxes and scraping pennies together.
Have fun folks.
|
| brian | Greetings,
How about meeting at the Eagle and Child at 12 noon on Tuesday 31st December for a sandwich and a pint then move to the museum for the Historical Society meeting and walk at 1p.m. There should be plenty of opportunity to talk on the walk.
Regards,
Brian. |
| noel | That sounds OK by me Brian, I'll see if I can get Stuart Parker to come along. He laughed when I told him you couldn't remember me. Quoted a well known saying from Victor Meldrew.
Don't think you'd remember me now with my white hair and moustache though Brian, the moustache is handy for sieving the beer .Shall we wear a pink carnation and carry a copy of the Times ( joking ) |
| brian | Noel,
12 noon, 31st December, Eagle and Child. Confirmed. Carnations at the ready. All welcome.
At least there will be two of us.
Regards,
Brian

| Hayleypink | Hi there

| William R | Peter, When we went to Union Street school in the 1930`s we used to go up the back of the Eagle and Child, past the Sextons house (was that the Museum?) and through the churchyard, to avoid walking past the War Memorial. We were told that if you lifted one of the big slabs off a certain grave (we couldn`t) there would be a secret passage to somewhere up Sandy Lane for people to come to church who weren`t allowed to walk down Sandy Lane. Kids stuff? or was it? Oh, I wasn`t allowed to walk past the War Memorial unless I took my school cap off, my Dad said! From over the Pennines, Bill. |
| Lady Griffin | A great lesson in teaching respect, Bill, and all good wishes, Peter. It's soooooo romantic.
Linda
|
| Martin | All we need now is a way of recognising each other in the pub. I will be with Hayley, who has long blonde hair and who usually wears pink. If I get time, I could print a Leyland Forum sign... hmmm I might need a printer for that [:I] |
| Martin | I Have added a piccy to my profile :-) |
| Hayleypink | aw martin you look lovely xxxx
yes you will know me - will be wearing pink, and unless i have a insane moment, i have long blonde hair! |

| Hayleypink | lovely hun thanks xx |
| noel | Hello, what's all this. We'll have no luvvy duvvy here. This is a local shop for local people <bg> Well I'm glad I've got over that bug for Christmas, been laid low for a few days with some godforsaken illness. You will be able to recognise me by my white scruffy hair, scruffy moustache, red staring eyes that never blink. Are you really sure you want to meet me?? <vbg> Nah seriously love the background this is so christmassy, well done Martin. Hopefully I will be there with my wife Margaret ( her annual treat). |
| William R | Hi Noel, Good to see you`re better and joining in again. I find I now have arthritis in my knee, must be from too much begging. Let the young `uns have their fun, Noel, they`re tomorrows senior citizens you know. Enjoy the Season. Over the Pennines, Bill. |
| noel | Thankyou Bill, feeling a lot better now. Hopefully someone will take pity on me and buy me a pint <g> All the best over Christmas Bill and all forum members. |

Pretty cool Peter. Having expressed my thoughts over how this country is going have you never considered making the move to Toronto?
Good luck anyway and hopefully see you New Year's eve at the Eagle. |

Well, Martin and Hayley will recognise me (I hope! <g>), but for the rest of you I will be the short, haggard (lack of sleep!) one with short dark hair (with hints of grey!) and carrying a few extra pounds where the Christmas pudding landed and stuck! LOL![:o)] |
| William R | Hello Noel, Your lurgi must have crossed over the hills, I`ve been down all Christmas Night, Boxing Day (did it happen?) and beginning to come round today 27th. There`s nothing as bad as Sickness and Diary (can`t spell Diarrhoea) when you are on your own and nobody to grumble to. Hope everyone enjoys the Eagle get together, I used to visit there in the 1940`s, that was our Saturday Night starting place, finishing at the Motors Club, happy days. From over the Pennines, Cheerio Bill. |
| William R | Hello Haley and Martin, With a bit of luck I may be able to see you at the Eagle on New Years Eve at 12-00 noon.My eldest daughter says she will run me to Leyland, as she is the only Leylander of the family and wants to have a look at what you`ve done at the place. All the others owe their allegiance to Yorkshire having married into Yorkshire families. Hope I can make it, bang on 12 noon, you`ll recognise me as very old and decrepit, still over six feet and overweight. Keep hoping, Cheers, Bill from over the Pennines. |
| Hayleypink | [:0]
Cool see you there!!! |
| Lady Griffin | All the best everyone.
Have fun.

Linda |
| LDunlop76 | Hayley and Martin have been very anxious as the server for this forum went down and they were thinking everyone would think they'd done a runner! I've just let them know I'd managed to reach the forum today - phew!
I'll see everyone who can make it at the Eagle tomorrow!
So glad you can make it after all, Bill! :-) |
| Martin | Thanks Linda, I couldn't access the web site for two days. It's all sorted now... |
| LDunlop76 | Just sitting down with a cuppa after this lunchtime's meet. It was lovely to meet Bill, Joyce and Brian and great to see Martin and Hayley again - thank you all for an enjoyable lunch! [:)]
I was full of good intentions to go on the walk, but the warmth of the pub's fire and the lure of the nattering was too tempting. We must do it again sometime - hopefully we can arrange something when Lady G is over in the spring. Keep posting into 2003, folks! |
| Hayleypink | Hi all,
Thanks for coming, and it was good meeting you all!
Happy New Year, love Hayley N Martin xx |
| William R | Hello Haley,Martin,Wiganner et al, Wonderful to put faces to names, we got back home alright (wasn`t it cold on the Walk). Sorry to see the changes to the old place, but we must move on, look forward to seeing you all again soon. I will "Keep the faith" in the Forum and keep posting. Sorry Noel couldn`t make it, maybe another time. Cheerio from over the Pennines, Bill. |
| brian | Thank you to Martin, Haley,Wiganner,Bill and daughter and Peter for the meeting on 31st December 2002. It was good to meet you all. I am sorry that Noel was unable to be there. I dont remember receiving a sick note from him.
I discovered that Martin has financed this forum from his own funds and I suggested that if ever this becomes a burden he must let us know. He did say that he was considering some commercial input to the site to help cover costs.
Congratulations, once again, to Martin and Hayley for all their efforts and keep up the good work.
Happy New Year to everyone.
Brian. |
| Caroline | I was so sorry to miss this occassion, the Eagle's my favorite Leyland pub, and what a good idea to go for a walk- where did you get to?
I DID see the New Tescos when I was over, Gatwick Airport???
Are we having another meet in April when Lady G. comes over??? |

Yes, I'm sure regulars would be willing to contribute to costs to keep the forum alive.
Happy New Year to all! [:)] |
| Martin | Thank you all for the messages. We had a wonderful time over the Christmas period. I have just arrived back in Somerset and am in need of a bit of a rest.
The next meet? I suppose that's up to whoever wants one. I think April is a great idea. |
| brian | If Lady G is coming home at Easter time perhaps she could suggest some suitable dates for everyone to meet.
Regards
Brian |
| Hayleypink | Yes, that sounds like a great idea! Not sure if Me and Martin can make it up North but we'll be there in Spirit!
I am very proud of Martin, he has some great visions, and is looking at making a commerical sites for companies in Leyland to use.
Nice meeting you all, I am back in Kent, looking forward to 2003. |
| Thornley | Happy New Year to all of you. I am sorry that I could not make the meeting but glad to hear you all had a good time. If work allows I will be there in April if something is arranged.
Vanessa |
| Peter119 | Hi All
Happy new year
If you would like the full historical walk in April, let me know.
Hopefully David Hunt, the curator of the Museum will be able to open the museum too then.
Peter |
| Hayleypink | Happy New Year everyone!! |
| noel | Hy all belated greetings for the new year.
I am so sorry I missed the get together particularly as I'm probably closest to the venue but late unexpected family events took over and since then I've been laid down with this darn flu/sickness bug again.
I agree we should help Martin with the finances if they become too much. I didn't realise he funded this himself. |
| Lady Griffin | Pleased you had a good meeting if a cold one.On New Year's Eve I drank a toast to all and munched Caroline's scrumptious biscuits.
