Message order, activity, etc
dedwardsaI hate to be a pain, but tracking current activity is a major pain. The "active topic" flags are useless to the point of being broken (and, no frankly, I am NOT going to log out every time when I don't have to - if the cookie can remember me it can remember when I last requested a page and make calcs on that). As it stands, it's unacceptably difficult to track conversations, and if you're lucky enough to find a "live" thread, you're not pointed at the latest post, but the earliest. I'd like to think I've missed the obvious options in the profile and could be easily enlighted...
dedwardsaAnd that's me done... A dozen or so active topics have disappeared...
SpitfireMy main problem, as I said before, is remembering where I posted what. I am always trawling through threads in order to see where I have been. I am not blaming the site in any way, as I know it`s my own fault. However - I`d be most greatful if anyone would share their `easy to find` systems. I could then dispense with my hi-tec note pad.
JohnHIf cookies are on, clicking the 'Active Topics' links should show you all the topics/new topics containing new posts since your last visit. Threads show-up in ascending date order, just drop to the bottom or if topic covers more than one page click the last page (or whatever). When you have finished reading/replying to a topic try using your browsers 'back' button to return to the list of active topics. Don't forget a list of your recent threads is available on your 'Profile' page - just click it will take you straight to topic.
noelDave there is a combo box justabove the main topics to the left hand side which says "active topics since" if you click the combo box you can change the option to a day agao, 2 days 3 days, whatever, or even less than a day. Like you I did have great difficulty in keeping up with the active threads before discovering the box.
LDunlop76Am I unique? I never seem to have bother locating the active threads. Sometimes the purple box remains yellow, but I can generally remember the date I last visited and just look at the date of the latest posting on the right hand side to see what's new since I was last here.
noelIt doesn't take rocket science does it Linda.
William RNever have any problems except with the coloured flags, nithing to worry about anyway. Martin keeps me on the right path. William R.

Hopelessly inaccurate and unreliable. Doesn't update between posts and then suddenly drops a dozen "live" topics". Broken is the work we're looking for.

It's on the right hand side and only appears when you've entered a topic. absolutely useless at the top level. and it's not accurate, even were it available.

Probably, we all are. If the purple box doesn't accurately reflect the status it's just plain wrong. And, Martin, I can write manual replies faster than your flood control allows. It's impolite to ban me for being able to compose rational replies faster than your robot can deal with them.

No it's on the left, just above the forum box. If you lose track click on active 1 day ago . Anything less than a day is not accurate . This is a local forum scripted as a hobby by Martin. I think a bit of praise rather than constant whinging would be good. My glass is half full, my wife's half empty. At times it seems like some haven't got a glass.
JohnH
And, Martin, I can write manual replies faster than your flood control allows. It's impolite to ban me for being able to compose rational replies faster than your robot can deal with them.
Flood Control exists to prevent members from posting the same message two or more times. If the pc and/or connection is running slow, a lot of people can't resist the temptation to press the Post New Reply button again, and again, etc - this could result in multiple postings of the same message: hence flood control [:D]
noelThat must be something new John, I've posted the same thing twice as have a few other of the forum. Not recently though, I've learned to be a bit more patient with the speed of the internet ( or lack of in my case).

It's certainly not broken ar unreliable. My active topics works every time. I open IE, goto forum/active.asp or click the active topics link and hey presto! there they all are. However, if you visit the forum, then go away and come back a few minutes later, you will not see the same list of active topics because it will show you a list of active topics since the last time you looked at the forum. There is also an option which allows you to look further back, at topics, this is a drop down selection box which will start off with "Last Visit on........" then "Last 15 minutes" etc "Last 2 months"

You are quite right Noel, Dave is actually mistaken here. The box on the right is completely different and shows ALL topics within the stated time period. The box on the left shows ONLY active topics in the stated time.

Hear, hear! I don't think there can be such a thing as the perfect forum. I reckon this one is pretty damn good. (See you later for the bribe money, Martin[;)])
Martin[quote(See you later for the bribe money, Martin[;)])
Thank you for the positive comments folks!!! Although people have indicated that they would be prepared to pay towards the hosting of this site, all I am asking so far is a little help on the Lancashire Search feature. This will eventually be located on another web site. If succesful, the revenue from the other site should pay for the hosting package. I will give out more details when I feel ready to proceed.

Dave You can see answers to many technical questions about the forum features at Snitz Forums The technical help is second to none as far as I can see and the members are very helpful.
ThornleyMartin, keep up the good work. I have always found the active topics area fine. My visits at present are not as often as I would like but when I do I have no trouble keeping up with the topics. Vanessa[8D]
MartinThanks Vanessa

William RMartin. Was it Capt, Oates who said to his mates "I`m going now, and I may be some time" so I`m away to the Highlands for a few days, but as General MacArthur said as he came away from the Far East theatre during the war "I will be back" From over the Pennines, kilt swirling, Cheerio, William R.

Lady GriffinWell I think this Forum is the best and Martin hasn't banned me yet.[^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^]
MartinI don't think I have banned anybody yet. Do you think I should at least ban one person?
Hayleypinkno!!!!!
noelFortunately we are a good bunch Martin, any potential trouble has been defused usually by the "trouble-maker" not subscribing anymore. I find the same with Hayley's forum.
Lady GriffinAgreed Noel-we are definitely a good bunch.I think it's great how my griffin appears and I don't have to do anything. LG

LDunlop76Thank you, Lady G, for your congratulations. I'm posting in "soundbites" (LOL!) to boost my total. Not sure I can get to 8,000 though...... hmmmm, I average 500 posts a year..... I'll be a top poster in 16 years then!

Good on you Linda, I missed you creeping up on me and Martin there. My owl will get you though, beware Olly Beak.
Lady GriffinI was second once but then couldn't post for six weeks when I traveled plus my "find no words" time which was a kind of sickness. There should be a bonus when that happens-sort of like compensation for points lost for sound reasons. Never mind I'm a good loser. LG

I'm not frightened of a cyber owl, Noel! [:p] Besides, dunno what you're worried about - as I crossed the 600 barrier, you clocked up 700!
William RMartin, The Golden Oldie is back again after a short stop over the Border at Arrochar. Went there to relax and think, now thinking about relaxing. I`ve decided I can`t match up to the spate of postings by Lady G. so I`m going to put my oar in now and then to upset her (I know all about these ex teachers) When I was up at Loch Lomond I saw two Golden Eagles flying in the wild, a very rare sight, enhanced by a free tot of Whiskey on the boat I was on. Of course, it rained some of the time, and the midges bit for the rest of the time, so I thought I`d better get home and see what "herself" had been up to on the Forum. You win, Lady G. Regards, Bill.
MartinWelcome back Bill. It sounds like you enjoyed your trip.
LDunlop76Welcome back, Bill! [:)][:D][8D][:)][:D][8D]
Lady GriffinWelcome back Bill, You were missed .Really thought the midges had done you in. Am going to slow down and let you catch up, so get going before I change my mind. Quite jealous aout the Golden Eagles -must have been a magnificent sight. Cheerio LG

I have just dusted off my forum scissors for that one LG. That's not the correct way to get your score up.[^]
skitzyWelcome back Bill, hope you had a good time. I really enjoy reading your postings Eileen
Hayleypinkwb bill!!
Hayleypinkcheat!!!!!!!!
William RThanks fellow posters, I didn`t realise that I`d been missed so much by you. Lady G thought I`d been eaten by midges, sorry, but they only go for the natives. The eagles were fine, so were the heron and all sorts of birds you never see in Barnsley, (they all have short skirts and tight jumpers) a rare sight in Scotland. It was "that" time of year when the Senior Citizens come out in force, I had a young man of 75 for a Companion for the week, took some keeping up with. It was a good place to get away to for a bit away from the scrutiny of the two Linda`s. Now back to the grind of the Forum and trying to up my total. Martin, tell Lady G to stop posting for a bit then I can catch up. All for now, Cheerio, Bill.

My husband is half Scots so that would explain why he was only bitten half to death by midges last time we stayed in Scotland! [:o)]

Doesn't explain why they always go for me though, 99.9% Lancashire with just a dash of impurities ( Yorkshire <spit!!> ) I prefer to just say the females are attracted to me ( not mentioning the fact they are midge females.)

Yes, it's not bad, is it? We usually take a citronella candle on holiday with us to repel mozzies while we're sitting round the BBQ.
