| Lancashire Search. |
| Martin | I am putting together a Lancashire search engine for use on another web site (eventually). It's fairly empty at the moment and needs lots of Lancashire links adding to it.
You can find it here... Lancashire Search
This is a temporary link and front end. Any additions to the database would be gratefully recieved. |
| noel | Couldn't find kumcrat on it Martin. Parched Peas neither. Nor Wilfred Hyde White.
Found Preston though, what needs adding to it to make it work? Pardon my ignorance but would it not be easier just to link in google? Or does that spoil the challenge? |

The point of it is that it will contain local links only. It has only got about half a dozen links in it so far, so you won't find much until more urls are added. I could link to google, but that would produce a lot of none Lancs web sites.
If you find a Lancashire web site that you would like to add, click on the "submit url" link, add the title, url, some relevant keywords and a short descrition. It won't be an overnight success, but will grow in time. |
| noel | OK Martin, I understand now. Off to find a parched peas URL now. <vbg> |
| noel | Wooo it works, I've added the world famous Preston North End to it.
Type in Preston North End and the URL is there. Nice one Martin. |
| noel | Just a thought though Martin, maybe there should be a seperate category for sports, then sub-headings football, cricket etc, then subsub headings PNE, Blackburn, Black<spit>pool? |
| noel | I just added Peter's Historical Society. When I typed in to search "Leyland " it brought the site up plus a few you had put on already Martin? What if we duplicate? Doesn't matter I guess, stop rambling Noel. |
| dedwardsa | It does seem pretty poor at present. I'd have thought even a modest spidering ability would have been able to crawl more sites than that, given that someone's typed in this domain and it has many links to other sites. |

Dave, I believe this is a new directory (not a search engine) set-up by Martin for local (Lanky) sites only! These things don't happen overnight, they need input from others to help them grow - so start adding any links you have.

Hey, don't knock it! Martin puts in all this effort in his spare time, you know! |
| noel | Words like "Meldrew" and "Victor" spring to mind ( but not in that order ) |
| noel | I've added the URL to my favourites Martin as I got fed up keep having to find the topic over and over again , would it be possible to have an ongoing listing of the sites we have on the search engine to avoid duplicating and give us an idea what we should be looking at.
Noel, also known to his wife as "Victor". |
| William R | I`m lost on this one so I`ll back out. Cheers Bill |
| noel | It's dead easy Bill, think of a subject that people may want to know about Lancashire. go to a search engine, google's the best imho, www.google.co.uk
type in what you are looking for, parched peas recipe or whatever, copy it's URL by highlighting it and control c at the same time ( copies it) go to the lancashire search site, follow the instructions and control v ( paste ) the url in the appropriate box. There now I've wasted my 600th post you'd better not let me down Bill or I'll unleash the boys on you. 8-) |

I'm sure he's very good at his day job, whatever it is. It's just this search engine that he's punting doesn't seem to be the full article. |
| Sandieh | Great idea Martin, I`ve added a few of my favorite web sites.
Thanks, Sandie. |

[8D]Its not a search engine, more a page of Lancashire links makes it nice and easy if they are all together.[:p][:D] |

It's all down to keywords Noel. I will sift through the entries every now and then to make sure they are correctly set up.

Dave, it doesn't spider anything. It is a database of sites entered by users. There aren't many sites on it at the moment, but that will change in time and we aren't in a rush, are we? |

Noel, at this early stage, I would just enter whatever you think qualifies for submission. I have full access to the database and can easily run off a report to find duplicates.
One thing I did notice, some links start off with "http://http://" which will return an error when accessed. I will edit these soon but it's worth pointing this out now. make sure your submission only has one http:// at the begining. |

Th man said search engine.
To clear thing up. It is a database that is accessed as a search engine, for instance, you enter words into the search and it returns matching results. Which is just what a search engine does. What it doesn't do, is crawl the internet adding everything and anything that it finds. This bit is done by manual submission, which makes this type of search engine more specialised. |
| Martin | I am still adding one or two urls to the search engine whenever I get the time. It is something that will take a very long time to rival any other lancashire list, but I'm quite pleased with how it's going so far. |
| noel | The reason forthe 2 lots oh http martin is that there is one pasted in already so when anyone copies the URL they should just copy the bit AFTER the http\\ thingy. |
| Martin | What I usually do is select the URL box, which highlights the text already in there. If you then paste in your URL, it will copy over it. It's not a big job for me to correct this though. |
| noel | OK will try. |
| Martin | Another thing I have noticed is that some of the links were incomplete.. for instance http://www.domain.co.uk/sport/le
Instead of http://www.domain.co.uk/sport/leyland.htm
I'm not sure why that is but I have corrected the ones that are in there now. |

I can't always see fully what I've pasted. There are only spaces for about 6 letters or so in the gap for the URL whereas some of them have more letters than darn village in Anglesey, you know the one,
LlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllLlantysiliogogogoch
|
| Martin | You can actually put in more than what fits into the url window. I always cut and paste the websites as I visit them |
| noel | Yes I realise that Martin, it's just that my brain can't keep up with the scrolling left and right to check it's OK. |
| Martin | I'm still plugging away at this Lancashire database search type thingy engine. I might just link it to my front page so that more people will add to it. |
| Lady Griffin | Thanks for the extra star Martin.I think you're doing a fantastic job

I did suggest it was difficult to remember to access when you first raised it Martin, I have it losted as a favourite but keep forgetting to check it out. |
| Lady Griffin | I'm sure Bill will be back.[8D]
I actually thought it was too cold for midges in Scotland. We have sand flies here and ants and wasps and mosquitoes and in Waitakere City the Painted Apple Moth. There has been a spraying campaign going on from the air since last October to try to get rid of the caterpillar and it's still on-going.

Yes, my father and step-mother discovered that to their cost when they were badly bitten by sandflies on their visit to NZ a couple of years ago! [xx(] |
| noel | It's never too cold for scottish midges LG, they are hewn from girrrderrrs.
The Scottish midge is custodian of the glens. Take the midge out of Scotland and you'll have a country full of tourists, heaven forbid. |

There is an active users mod which I can install for the forum. It tells you how many active users there on the forum and who they are. |

Well, if you don't outrank him, you can certainly pull his leg a bit! Mind you, if the Scots midges are anything like they normally are, he may be too weak from loss of blood (from midge bites!) to type much on his return. [:o)] |
| Martin | I have noticed that the input form cuts some links short. this has been lengthened so it should except most urls |
