Hello Everyone
SpitfireI hope that it`s just a very busy time of the year for everyone, and that interest in this forum hasn`t waned. I have been a member of a genealogy forum for several years and the averege number of chatters has fallen from about sixteen to three in the last couple of weeks (Martin ,please take note - it may be a national trend). Speaking solely for myself, I feel very disappointed (when checking my e-mails) that there are no postings to read.
anacortesdampI guess it's been a quiet few days. Maybe everyone is so busy with preparations for Christmas (and in the case of those of us in the US, participation in family Thanksgiving get-togethers) that nobody has had the time to participate in the forum. We certainly had a tough two weeks. On 26 Nov, we went to our #2 daughter's home to help her pack for a move (75 miles each way for us). The next day we went to #1 daughter's for Thanksgiving dinner (62 miles each way). On the Friday, back to #2 daughter's to coordinate the move, staying overnight to do a microwave oven installation and to hook up the clothes dryer and a new central heating system thermostat. Arrived home late Saturday evening, then found on Sunday morning that the pump that keeps the house crawl space (undercroft?) dry had failed and there was 18" of water down there. Fortunately, none of the wooden structure of the house got wet. We spent the next week reworking the pump system to minimise the risk of another failure. I only finished the details today! This involved digging a 4' deep, 10' diameter hole, installing a new drainage sump and extraction pump, then filling the hole in again. A week in Hawaii would be very welcome right now! That's why I haven't posted for a few days! Frank Damp
noelI'm also having a busy time, what with my wife invalided with her feet, all the domestic chores fall on me. Plus of course the kitchen won't decorate itself. My son's set off to Perth in Australia, had a 24hr delay at Paris whil the plane was fixed. Just heard he's off to rottnest island to swim with dolphins. I prefer swimmin with wimmin as George Formby once sang. On top of that the narrow band has been deathly slow it's like watching grass grow. So yippee from today I'll be on Broadband.
William RWelcome to Broadband, Noel, it makes a heck of a difference, I wouldn`t be without it. Have you not finished that kitchen decor yet? and you always thought "her inside" had an easy time of it!!! Now you know, hope she can join in the Christmas Festivities OK. You should talk to Lady G about plane delays - when she went back in October, she had a changeover at Singapore, but a faulty battery delayed take-off. Passengers sent back to Lounge, SOMEONE told them to spread about a bit. Repair made in half an hour, but passengers were all over the shop and had to rounded up - result, over three hours delay. Took her over thirty hours to get back. Its called organisation, I believe. William R.
LDunlop76Hiya, Jim! Not been posting much because there's only me in this house doing all the Christmas preparations and there aren't enough hours in the day!
noelBroadband is how the internet is meant to be William. Had to take Margaret to Casualty today, infection in her toe. 4 and a half hours later, we got out. Who said NHS isn't understaffed.
MartinThere's faster things then Broadband in the pipeline. The forum does experience quiet times and I expect christmas to be one of those times.
noelTelewest have got a twice as fast Broadband. Not sure how to get it or even if I want it at the moment.
ThornleyI have to admit the time I have spent on this forum has reduce further than before. I have not even had the time to pop in and browse[:(]christmas preparations and another exam[xx(]have taken their toll on my time. Hopefully we will all have that little bit more time soon. Noel, I just got broadband this weekend[:D]I cannot believe how fast it is. Vanessa
William RNoel, Telewest do two high-speed systems, I think they call them 1k and 2k but you have to pay ptemium prices for them. I believe they were introduced for business users. Before long, Telewest will be giving the answer to queries before you ask the question. I once had a Broadband query and rang 150 for information, I found myself hooked up to three engineers for my problem, in Bradford, Birmingham and Liverpool. Each giving a suggested remedy, which was corrected by me switching to standby whilst they sent signals down the Cable to sort it out, which they did. What I had was on Pay for View, where the picture booked played for a time and reverted to the advertising channel, then went to an entirely different picture, time and again. I had an entertaining evening talking to three engineers who were watching what was happeneing on my set in three different places, then discussing their actions with me. In the end a kind of "Eureka" cry as they found the fault in a junction box on a main road which was being shook by passing traffic.. No more trouble since, got a free film of my choice, a booking rebate and total cost to me - nil. I`ll stay with them if only for their persistence in problem solving. William R.
William RJust had a look, the two services are 1Mb and 2Mb from Blueyonder. Sorry for wrong info. William R.
SpitfireWilliam, I have the 1Mb broadband from Blueyonder and a right click on the icon gives a `repair` option. It`s supposed to self-repair faults, although `touch wood`, I havn`t had to use it yet. Vanessa, The speed is indeed truly amazing. I`ve just had a 56,000 page hit on Google that took all of 0.01 seconds!
