When you look at the photo, you can probably see why Linda.[:)] |
| Spitfire | Ah Noel, The photograph has let your secret out. You were a Subbuteo player in a former life. [:p] |
| noel | I was auditioned for Lord of the Rings Jim but they couldn't find a part weird enough. 8-) |
| LDunlop76 | OK, how come Noel, Jim and Lady G (cos 11pm Christmas Eve our time is noon Christmas Day her time) were all on the forum on Christmas Day? Some people will do anything to get out of sprout-peeling duty! <g> |
| Spitfire | I would just like to add my seasons greetings and very good wishes to you all. |
| Karen | I am about to disappear into the sticks for 3 weeks ...no internet.
4 feet of sparkling snow .... the family are coming to spend New year with us.
Bonfire ... noise makers ... all the goodies ... plus ... sleds, hot chocolate and marshmallows for
the grandchildren ...pure magic.
WISHING YOU ALL,
A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS and
A BEAUTIFUL AND JOYOUS NEW YEAR.
Karen. |
| noel | And to you Karen, I hope you enjoy your Christmas. |
| LDunlop76 | Have a lovely time, Karen, and return to us refreshed from your break in the New Year! |
| LDunlop76 | Season's greetings to all contributors and may 2004 bring us all health, wealth and happiness! [:D] |
| Lady Griffin | Same goes for me as well-take care everybody and all the best for the New Year.[8D]
LG
|
| noel | Same here, though I thought last week was a little early for Carol singers who knocked on our door. |
| Martin | Best Wishes to everyone, members and none members. And thank you. |
| Lady Griffin | Don't get carol singers around here.
My Grandfather used to get them all in the front room ,line them up and put them through their paces.
Then out came the mince pies when he was sufficiently satisfied with the performance..
Doubt if he would invite them in these days.
LG |
| noel | The youngsters carol singing these days don't know much more than the first 2 lines. If you stand at the door and listen to them, that's all you get. Incidentally Lady G you mentioned Duran Duran in another post. Simon Le Bon is a big Pink Panther fan. Remember the theme tune for it? Duran, Duran Duran Duran Duraaaaaaaan. |
| Martin | Noel, isn't that a joke about Durham, Durham, Durham durham durham |

Martin you missed the punch line. "Durham Durhaaaaam".[;)] |
| Spitfire | Karen, Sounds wonderful, I don`t suppose you need anyone to carry your suitcase for you? Very best wishes to you and see you in the new year. |
| William R | Enjoy the break Karen, real snow - now there`s a thing!!! William R. |
| Alan Marsden | It's twenty three years since I spent a Christmas in the Leyland/Preston area, we did on occasion get some snow, but nothing compared to the fourties and fifties when I was at school.
Is there now considerably less snow falling over the winter period than say twenty years ago ?
We had about five inches over the last twelve hours, so, we had the snowblower out for the first time this winter !
I would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

Have a very "Happy Christmas and New Year" everyone, All my best wishes to you, Sandieh.
PS, Karen send me some of that snow its very hot here !!!! LOL
....Have a wonderful time.
|
| Thornley | Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.
Vanessa |
| Spitfire | Alan, Snow in Leyland is something of a rarity these days. I think we had some on only two seperate days last year and that didn`t stay for any length of time. It`s just as well really because we are not geared up to handle more than an inch or two. More than that and the place grinds to a halt. |

Yes! Hardly ever have cause to get the wellies out and children hardly know what it's like to make snowmen - if we do get snow, there's rarely enough to make anything of decent size. A White Christmas is more likely to be frost than snow these days! (Watch it chuck down 6 inches of the stuff now I've said that! LOL!) |
| magicman | Have been flying around the South East of London doing christmas shows for children (schools, clubs, etc.) - I am over the proverbial moon that I have not yet had a show where the children have been 'bad'. Makes a change from the last few years and makes me very happy indeed.
Have a great time everyone - best wishes to all.
Noel (Mk.II) |
| skitzy | All the best to everyone for christmas & the new year
Hope its a safe & happy one for you all.

| Spitfire | Lady G. Very strange - but it`s snowing here also [:)]. It`s all we will get. In fact we have just about as much chance of getting some as you have. Happy Christmas to you. |
| noel | I've been looking at TV pictures of Buckingham Palace enveloped in a blaze of lazer lights to the pattern of the Union Flag. Very very impressive.
The queen isn't very happy because Anne's bull terrier attcked her Corgi so badly she had to have it put down. The same dog attacked 2 children this year and she was fined £500 and ordered to keep it on a lead. Maybe if she had done that or had it put down the queen would be a bit happier this Christmas.
I've got a recent photo of myself. Hope you like it.

| noel | It was relax time Linda, away from the grandchildren for a while. Somebody said you should have grandchildren before you have children. I'm not so sure anymore. <bg> |
| Spitfire | Lida, Marjorie took to her bed with `flu Christmas eve, so I was at a loose end (having peeled the sprouts first, of course). |
| anacortesdamp | I saw a framed motto in a store the other day that said "Grandchildren are your reward for not strangling your teenager".
Frank |
| William R | Great Grand Children can be a bit of a labour of love at times too!!!
Speaking from experience...... W.R. |
| Spitfire | I used to give a condesending smile regarding grandchildren - until mine came along! Whatever people say say about doting grandparents -- IT`S ALL TRUE . |
| Lady Griffin | Don't do the sprout thing anymore-it was certainly a regular part of the process of preparing for the big day-that and shelling peas.A concession to age is that someone else does the major work and other hangers on like me contribute to the feast. The vegetable of the moment here was roasted stuffed capsicum -a bit different.
No doubt I shall have to revise my sprout peeling skills etc in the New Year.
LG
|
| noel | We've never eaten sprouts ever since I bit into one in the works canteen and there was a maggot inside.
Dead I should add. There is only one thing worse than finding a maggot inside a brussel sprout, and that's half a maggot!! |
| Spitfire | Lady G. Capsicum????? O.K. In ten words or less - what is it?
|
| Lady Griffin | Just a pepper-red, yellow or green and there are orange ones around-lots of seeds -used in salads and stir fries but can be cooked.
I know they are in UK cos William R uses them.
LG |
| Spitfire |
Lady G Thanks for that. We use them also. Have only ever called them peppers LOL |
| Lady Griffin | As for your unfortunate experience Noel ,not to worry -we all have to eat a certain amount of dirt and debris in our lifetimes -or so I'm told.
Mind you I always look very carefully under lettuce leaves when dining out-another result of a memorable event.Snail Trails!
One of the things I got used to here years ago was the presence of weevils even in unopened packets of biscuits -flour -cereals etc.
Once I returned a packet of chocolate biscuits to a well known maker and received a large box of assorted back. The locals assured me at the time that weevils were not dirty like flies ,but the grubs certainly are similar.Modern technology has dealt with that problem I believe.
Preparation of brussels involves peeling and making a cross at the top I was told to make them cook better-I noticed that the sprouts in UK are tinier and sweeter than I remembered.
Here endeth the cooking session!

| Lady Griffin | Thanks for the New Year Message ,Jim, and I am sure you had loads of chances.[:D]
LG |
| Hayleypink | awww thanks noel :) |
| Martin | I hate sprouts, they should be banned. |
| Lady Griffin | I think marrows should be banned.Taste of nothing but mush.
Tried to stuff one with mince and onions and baked it once-still tasted of mush.
Sprouts are much better.
Aubergines should be banned -all oily and yuk.
LG |
| LDunlop76 | OK, I let you all off being on here on Christmas Day! ;-)
Sprouts are fine if they're decently cooked - not put to boil in November as my mother seemed to do! LOL! I buy the smallest, nicest-looking sprouts and carrots a week or two before Christmas Day and blanch and freeze them myself, then all I have to do on Christmas Day is tip them into boiling water till heated through. The sprouts were beautiful - bright green and tasty, not that awful snot-green and sulphurous type served in my youth! |
| Alan Marsden | I like sprouts cooked in the microwave, not overdone, mushed up with butter and a little white pepper- scrumptious !!!
I've tried 'artichokes' but there must be a knack to cooking them, and I've not found it, does anyone know a good recipe for artichokes ?
While carrots are delicious, they tast even better when they are mixed with turnip (rootebaga) in North America, and mushed ,again with white pepper and butter ! |
| William R | I stand in the "pro sprouts" lobby. Selected properly and cooked right, there is nothing better. I buy them when they are young and blanch them and freeze them. Use as required. Very tasty, very sweet. (Wasn`t that on a Radio show, way back?) William R. |
| Spitfire | William, I also am a member of the `pro-sprout` lobby. They must of course be slightly crunchy. I can`t face them if they are mushy. |
| rocketmanjohn | I guess I'm in the minority, I hate sprouts, turnips, turnip and collard greens [they eat the leaves in the south-yuk], cabbage, cauliflower, swedes, egg plant, pumpkin, artichokes, beets, beans. It's easier to say what I do like, peas, carrots and mushrooms. Take it from me Alan, cook the artichokes any way at all, then throw them away.
John
|
| Lady Griffin | All I can remember eating back in the good old days was cabbage cabbage and more cabbage-usually boiled till brown-sprouts on high days and holidays -peas when my grandad grew them-carrots and turnips mashed together with butter and pepper -scrumptious.Here you would add Kumara and maybe parsnips for extra flavour.
Had never eaten pumpkin till I came here-roasted pumpkin and pumpkin soup are very popular as is Silver Beet which grows well in most vegie gardens.

It seems not! LOL! I've been too busy over the holidays to get online much and this is my first visit to the forum for a couple of days. Funnily I rarely look how many postings I have clocked up, btu now you have pointed out how close to the magic 1000 I am, I will put extra effort in today and get an extra star on the first day of the year! [:)] |
| LDunlop76 | Hayley, if you want more stars, you'll have to post more here! <g> Which reminds me, I haven't looked at your forum for over a week! Gotta get my 1000 up here first though! |

1001, well done Linda, remember the advert 1001, cleans a big big carpet, for less than half a crown.
Not now it doesn't does it? |
| Martin | Is it as good as Shake and Vac Noel? |
| William R | Well done Linda, over 1000 posts, Congrats. William R. |
| Spitfire | Well done Linda. Congrats on your `Kilopost`.
Who`s going to be first with a `Gigapost`? (Will I still be around then - I ask myself). |
| noel | Shake and Vac only makes the carpets smell better Martin. 1001 gives a deep down clean, right to the intersteces of the fabrics, nourishing and refreshing with new ingredient GTXI. And only for half a crown. |
