A bit of fun
MartinI've added a site menu at the top of the page above the clock. I have also uploaded a crossword puzzle for you all to have a go at. It's my first effort so tell me what you think. It's a bit thin on content, so the long words will be hard to guess. I can make more puzzles if enough people provide me with the material (words and clues).
skitzy A good crossword Martin I got stuck on a few, is there any chance of extra clues? Eileen

I turned the clues off [:D] [:D] I'll give them out when more people have had a go. I could do with some ideas for more crosswords folks. I quite like this software, it was free and very easy to use
dedwardsaFabulous stuff, Martin.
Hayleypinkvery cool martin!
JohnHGood addition Martin. You may already have this link http://www.freesticky.com/stickyweb/ to other free web content.
anacortesdampMartin: There's a free crossword evey day on these two sites. You might want to just link them, rather than copy them over, to avoid copyright issues. Users should be aware that the spelling is US English. http://www07.pogo.com/index.jsp?sls=2 http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/crossword/ Frank
dedwardsaWell, at the risk of making myself unpopular, there's a free crossword in the Sun, Mirror, Times, Telegraph, Express, Guardian, Mail, FT, and so on. You can probably link to them. Only question is, what would that link add to the site? There are many learned articles on "management" that cover the differing efficacies of a) hiring in the local baker to run the roach coach and b) handing out stuff you've cooked yourself. I think the principles apply here, too.
MartinThanks for the links Frank. I see your point Dave. For a while now, I have been asking the members (and anyone else who visits) for content to add to the web site. Sometimes it feels like my words have fallen on deaf ears (or eyes), but the forum has grown steadily over the past year and I have to say that I do get a lot of satisfaction out of it, especially when I see the difference it has made to the people who use it. Progress on this site is slow, but I feel it's going in the right direction.
anacortesdampActually, Dave, many of the UK newspaper crosswords are available only to "Club" members who pay 20 quid or so a year to get on-line access. The two I listed are free and change every day. My wife does both of them daily. Frank
dedwardsaTo be honest, Frank, I don't care how free or good they are. Or, indeed, what you have to pay. If they provide someone somewhere with enjoyment, that's good enough. On the other hand, the essence of a site like this is that it will inevitably entail more effort than posting a link to an automated or plagiarised source of "stuff". Martin's effort was good for many reasons, but especially because it was individually prepared, rather than merely copied or linked. I know that the time taken to prepare this sort of stuff is out of all proportion to the reward (why d'you think the papers automate it?), and I'd also hazard a guess that even if we paid a single person something for their efforts, they probably wouldn't have time to do it justice. If hosting costs and the like are an issue, why not go for donations or affiliates to defray? I guess, though, in real terns, what is required is more elbow grease... and reading between the lines, that may not have been readily forthcoming. But, if extra resources available, what would people like to see? A Leyland quiz, diary, picture page, "letter from" column? Happy to help, but definitely averse to a "links" site :)

It's funny you should mention having a quiz. I have a little piece of software to host a quiz too [;)] It's one of the many open source freebies that I downloaded a while ago. When I have the time, I will give it a go..

<fx: bangs head gently on desk> I thought perhaps that just letting people chip in answers on a few questions might stimulate participation. Scoreboards, fastest finger first, and stuff could come later. Have you got a .wav of a cough? Just a thought :)
ThornleyKeep up the good work Martin, I have to say that because I know that I could not do what you do[8)] I like the new layout and the crossword is fine. Vanessa
noelI haven't solved one clue yet. Guess the only crossword I understand is Margaret when she gets angry. There again, what man ever understood what goes on in a woman's mind.:-) I think a few of us are a bit down at the moment Martin. The forum brings people together, in laughter and in tears.

Eeeeh, Noel! I had a look at the crossword one night when I couldn't sleep and even I managed to get a few answers and I'm not from Leyland, so I don't know what some of the clues are getting at. Get yer thinkin' cap on! As for being a bit down, yes, you're right there. But I've decided it's time I restored a little normality. I've been very touched by all the good wishes I've received from forum members - it has brought people together, so keep up the good work, Martin!
MartinThanks folks... I am thinking of introducing a pay per clue feature to the crossword [;)] Do you have a credit card Noel?

Wish I only had the one Martin. [:)]
skitzy Had great fun doing the crossword Martin, Have finally managed to complete it, with a bit of help. Eileen
LDunlop76Whoooh! Well done! Does Eileen get a prize, Martin?
MartinI'll give her a pat on the back! I might as well put up the answer option soon.
Hayleypinkyes answers needed!
SpitfireMartin - answers as soon as possible please. Am pulling my hair out here!
CarolineI just saw this, well done, Martin. I did about a third of it in 10 mins- it's probably all wrong, tho' !
noelAs a side issue I wonder if any of you ever saw the Steptoe and son episode where they (dad and son) were playing scrabble. The camera shot to the scrabble board where a few words had been entered in all of them 4 letters and a trifle risqué. Not sure why I wrote that. [:)]
Hayleypinkyes i loved steptoe and son!
MartinIt was a classic comedy series... I've never really liked playing scrabble all that much. I used to play chess when I was younger, probably haven't got the patience these days
Kath smithJust wondered if Mr Pink did anything else except play on his PC? Is it your job Martin? Jolly good work if it is, if not excellent hobby, you should be paid. Havent had time to look at the crossword yet but will asap. Thanx.
MartinI do get paid to do other work on the pc... This site is my hobby though.
HayleypinkLOL ohh that would be good wouldnt it martin - getting paid to run a forum !! i like martin use the internet at work to access the forums...but shhhhhhhhhh dont tell the boss!!!
MartinI don't quite have as much time as you to browse the net Hayley! I fit in a few minutes when work allows.
HayleypinkYeh right. Whatever.
MartinI'll be uploading another crossword soon... courtesy of John. I'm slowly piecing together my pc software after reinstalling windoze last week... only another gigabite to go.

Sounds like they've been reproducing LG, not choking.
Lady GriffinI've finished with them now-it was getting to be stressful trying to keep up.Mind you I could always guarantee somebody would be writing to me everyday without fail, in case I got lonely again.Even if it was only the puzzlemaster.Since I got back I've had lots of junk mail of a delicate variety.I must have clicked somewhere I shouldn't have. It's been pelting down here. LG
noelNice and sunny here LG. You could download a Spambuster if your junk mail gets too much. I get loads, mainly commenting on a man's "size" shall we say, and Viagra that's a popular one, at first the Spam buster countered everything, now a few are getting through.
Lady GriffinAbsolutely right. How did you guess,Noel.I just thought I was almost spam proof and there they are. LG
MartinIf you are with a popular ISP, you are almost guaranteed to get spam. They have a way of churning out email addresses with every combination of letters and numbers you can think of. The worst ones are probably Hotmail and AOL.
