| WHY DO WE NOT HAVE A PROPER FOOTBALL CLUB |
| mossy | up until about 1988 leyland had a proper football club.remember them they was called leyland motors afc, they played there home games at thurston road.they was in the northwest counties league division 1.what i seem to remember happening was that they were sponsored by sgl station garage leyland.all of a sudden it was,nt enough for this company to have ther name on the shirts they wanted the club to be called LEYLAND STATION GARAGE MOTORS or something silly like this.the northwest counties league were having none of this .so sgl pulled ther sponsor ship.this meant the club could not afford to travel to away games.they pulled out of the league.before any one says we do have a football team i say what leyland town in the preston and district league .hardly the same as the north west counties is it .its one step up from park football.now even they don,t play at thurston road.the lancashire fa who own the football ground saw to that.we will never be in the fa cup 1st round (we allways used to get knocked out in the prelimanary round in august)besides the point at least we was in it.bamber bridge, chorley they have proper teams why dont we .....they took are football club they took are festival what next
|
| David | Hey up [:D] Just wanted to get in on the act albeit about a year late [:D] I remember Leyland Motors being in the Lancashire Combination way back when....and as a young lad, I remember playing against Leyland Red Rose...what happened to them [?] The pitch in Leyland had a brook running along side of it...so where was that then [?][?][?] A well known town like Leyland should have a footy (soccer)[8D] team. Let's start one [B)] |

Congratulations on your 100 LG. And sorry but it's football. The Americans highjacked the name football for that boring watching paint dry game that should be known as grid-iron. I refuse to call the game "soccer" simply because they do.

Ah but look at the stride that the USA has made in a game that they find boring to watch.....World Soccer Rankings.....
1 Brazil
2 France
3 Spain
4 Germany
5 Argentina
6 Netherlands
7 Turkey
8 England
9 Mexico
10 United States
Just give them ten more years and the USA will top that chart.

| David | Linda. (my sisters name), I'm interested in your poster name, Lady Griffin. I took a peek at your profile expecting some connection to Wales....isn't the Griffin on the Welsh flag...maybe I'm off target ? |

After the result yesterday, England 1 - 3 Australia, don't be surprised to see England drop out of the top ten.

| Lady Griffin | Hey Up chaps! Seeing we're into the shape of the ball discussion!
No mention of the win by NZ over England in the World Rugby Sevens final last Saturday in Wellington.
Not that I'm interested you understand, but from all accounts it was a great game from both teams.A real party atmosphere.
Cheers from a parched land. |
| JohnH | It needs people to stir others to action! If Leyland want's a football team - it takes people with determination and well focussed goals! Look for other sponsers - what about Tesco!
JohnH |
| julie | hey john! Lets get Tesco up and running before we bother them, its looking good up there dont want to frighten then off,its only taken 30 years!

| Kath smith | They had a good team at St Mary's in the late 70's early 80's, one Glen campbell (Glen'o the Campbells caravan firm), Tim Knowles,(the one who's a millionaire now, and their mates, they were on Jim'll fixit and went to Mexico to play in a tournament, Jim certainly fixed it for those two, maybe not football but their businesses work for them.
And its only 20 years or so, since Chorley were playing in the same league as Wimledon and look where they got to. I remember going to London with my family so my dad and brother could see Chorley play The Wombles as they called them, I am sure its not there real nick name. I never remember Leyland beng any good.
As I've said I only went to school in Leyland.
|
| mossy | kath in 1986 leyland motors had a good team .i remember when we had mike stowell in the nets everton signed him for a club record £10,ooo which for motors was a lot of money.he went on to play for man city, wolves and now i think he is at bristol city.funny you should mention glen campbell probably one of the worst keepers i have ever had the misfortune to see.i remember him when he played for pne in there re election season .pne 2nd to bottom of division 4.campbell was useless in the nets.there was a rumor that the only reason he got in to the team was because his dad gave the chairman at the time a caravan.anyway pne saw the light and got rid,who got him yep you,ve guessed it leyland motors.he replaced are brilliant keeper mr stowell.no word of a lie here he let in 28 goals in 6 matches .he was a bag of shite.as for st marys on jim,ll fix it i remember that i think dave bentley was in the team.was it in 1979.i do remember the big jimll fix it badge in mr irvings office in the metel work block.

| Lady Griffin | My father Sam Sinfield played briefly in a Leyland Motors team I think in the 30's.
He was injured and never played again -lost his kneecap.
What about Dick Kerrs ladies. Now that was a football team.
Good to see that Bamber Bridge has made its mark at the Iron Gate farm site.I lived just down the road and had to run for the bus to Iron Gate Farm. You could see it coming round the corner at the Foundry-Baxis- and pity if the crossing gates were lowered as you had to take your life in your hands and cross in front of the train-used to drive the signal man barmy.
Bamber Bridge has a strong website network.
Maybe all Leyland needs are some good players and fat cheque books.
|
| noel | I used to go to school with a Sinfield. I think it was Brian or Ian , Farington Primary, a long time ago.
Bamber Bridge are allegedly heavily in debt, they had to get rid of a lot of players because, I think , their deal to allow Bolton to play their reserve games at Iron Gate fell through. PNE who had an agreement the season before had already taken umbrage and gone up to Giant Axe meaning a 40 miles trip for supporters in Leyland.
I didn't realise Leyland Motors had stopped playing. A lovely ground.
The Leyland Motors Brass Band is BNFL Brass Band now. Shame.
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| Lady Griffin | There are two branches of the Sinfield family and the two you mentioned must be from the Leyland faction.
Actually if you go back far enough there was a second marriage hence the split. However I grew up not knowing anything of the other lot -missed out on a lot of wedding invitations etc. It's only fairly recently that I heard about the other Leyland connection.
Vincent who died 1984 was I believe a gamekeeper /chauffeur at Worden Hall and married the cook who was a Speakman.
Does anyone remember the films shown in St Gerards Hall Lourdes Ave Tardy Gate during the 50's.I used to take my sister.A Mr Iddon the local grocer had a projector and showed Flash Gordon and the like.
Absolutely loved Flash. We stamped our feet and behaved like hooligans.
The Brig picture place was tops on a Saturday afternoon.Oodles of Roy Rogers and plenty of action.
Cheers

LOL yes it is a bit confusing isn't it.
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| Lady Griffin | Yes well and seeing I am in the football forum-call it soccer as football is rugby in Godzone-as a long time PNE supporter I find it quite unnerving that these modern soccer "stars" can be paid megabucks for shedding tears and performing hollywoods when real stars like Tommy Finney were to be seen going about their worldly jobs without all this fuss and pedestal stuff and nonsense.
There!!

I heartily concur with you over the over paid wages, " he's not very well paid, he's only on £3000 a week" I heard of one PNE player last week. Excuse me but £150,000 a year???
Why don't you call it rugger like we did at Balshaw's.?
The significant owl hoots in the night. |
| Lady Griffin | Don't know but haven't heard it called rugger here.I'll ask an expert.
I find it very boring and only pretend to be interested as it's all whistles and scrums and the the occasional run for the touch down to break the monotony.
To me it's about on a par with Survivor programmes on TV in the yawn stakes. This is heresy I know.
Now I do like a game of cricket provided the ball gets hit now and again.

Parched land ? Parched land ? With the south island being between latitude 40° and latitude 50°, wouldn't 'frozen land' be more descriptive ? [}:)][}:)][8D][8D] Does NZ play 'sevens' because they only have seven good players [?] I always thought rugby teams had about twenty players on a team [:o)] |
| Lady Griffin | Sorry no Welsh connection and can't sing a note in tune either.
Not sure when the silver griffin emblem was introduced to Balshaw's.
Probably about the time the 4 houses were dreamt up by Bull, Hilditch,Wilkinson and co.Means Vigilance and Loyalty I think.
Anyway while I was at BGS the emblem was referred to on many occasions as' Lord Griffin'-hence the Lady.
Topics on the sporting agenda for NZ-the final racing for the America's Cup starts on Sunday in Auckland waters.
A strange racing event since the defenders, NZ, only have to show up for the final challenge after all the other teams have sailed their little hearts out.
Alinghi, the challengers, have many Kiwi defectors from team NZ sailng for the chance to topple their own country.
Should be an interesting re-action should they beat NZ.
Getting away from the balls a bit, sorry for that.
Cheers

| noel | You obviousy don't remember your geography David New Zealand North Island has very hot weather in Summer.
Linda the sevens were not reported here, probably because all our best players are currently playing in their respective club sides.
Anyway it's about time New Zealnad beat England at something. <vbg> |
| Lady Griffin | At the moment we are basking in a heat wave in the North. As I type the noise of the cicadas is deafening and the cat has gone on an insect diet.
My potatoes are rising to the surface partially baked. However we are having a late late summer and as you know this is known as the Winterless North!!!! but the South can be much much chillier especially in winter.
Parts of the central South Island can be extremely dry at this time of the year and just a few weeks past there were bush fires threatening the Orana Safari Park in Christchurch-nothing like the terrible fires in Oz but still a worry.
Anyway as to the land of the oval ball and footy.
So many New Zealand players seem to defect to English teams like Warrington and Wigan from both Rugby and League it's hard to tell how many players are produced here.
Maybe we do only have seven left.
Even ones who began to play for English League like Inga Tuigamala just a few years ago now seem to be more English than me.
It was interesting to hear Henry Paul being interviewed about the performance of 'his' English team.
Anyway it's still only a game!!! |
| Lady Griffin | So Soccer really is a serious game after all-especially when it comes to hurling boots around and damaging stars like Beckham!!!!!!!! |

| Lady Griffin | Spice Girls fan,eh Hayley.Posh did well for herself!!!!!!!
If that's what she wants ,what she really really wants!Wouldn't mind her millions though.Should add -in my opinion-just in case.
Yachting sad news for NZ.
Three down.1 Boat swamped-nearly sank 2 Lost by seven seconds 3 Lost by 24 seconds.
Looks like the Cup is going to a land- locked country.
|
| noel | None of 'em could hack it solo so they're trying to resurrect their careers. I think it was a teeny bopper thing really, they never appealed to me.
I'm more a Kylie fan [:I] |
| Hayleypink | if you listened to mel c's album you would change your mind, some lovely ballads on there - and most of them written by herself. |
| noel | Maybe Haley but I'm too tight to buy any records. My kids chastise me for talking about the "Hit Parade" apparently I'm "square".??? |
| Hayleypink | oh gawd my mum still calls it the hit parade...........cringe!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
