Cinemas in Leyland
Bill RigbyCan anyone tell me how many movie houses there are in Leyland and their location? As a keen movie fan, I visit the Palm Springs International Film Festival each year and we generally see as many as 22 movies in five days. In 2002, David Hyde Pierce attended a movie in which he had a role and I had an opportunity to ask if he is related to David Hyde White. Turns out he is his son; his father moved to Palm Springs in the 1960s. Who recalls David Hyde White?

noelOh I recall hime very well. Hair matched his surname.Small with sharp features Re cinemas , none at all here in Leyland, the last one was The Palace in East St. but it was turned into a Bingo Hall many years ago and now is demolished. The closest cinema is Warner Bros at The Capital Centre Walton-Le-Dale.
MartinI remember the one by the roundabout, we used to go on a Saturday for the kids club. I did hear talk of one being built near the Tescos store, I don't know if it's still on the plans though.
Bill RigbyThanks for the responses; amazing that a town like Leyland has no cinemas! The population must be circa 20,000 these days. We used to call the Palace - it was the 'New Palace' at one time - the 'fleapit'. I recall a whole row of seats falling over when someone sat on the end seat. The Regent with its ancient Egyptian themed decor would have been a gem today had it not burned; I mean whoever designed it really went to town on the theme with lotus columns, scarabs, etc... even the colors. Does the vestige still remain or was it removed to make way for a new development? Anyone of you posters go to the cinema, by chance?
rocketmanjohnI used to go to the Palace on Saturdays to watch the latest 'cowie'. The owner used to arrive in a pink Cadillac. I believe he went on to own the 'Riviera' petrol station at Tardy Gate, what was his name? I always got parched peas afterwards from the sweet shop [green cabin] at the gasworks. Where have I heard this topic? John

I dont think its any different from any other small town in the UK. If you live near me say belvedere or erith, you have to travel a few miles to get to a cinema.

Estimates vary between 33 & 43,000. I guess it depends whether you count the metropoli of Moss Side, Farington, etc. Heck, there are 20,000 taxis!
Bill RigbyThanks, Dedwardsa, when I liver there it was 15,000; I did not envisage a doubling of the population since 1947. What did the last census say? Saw a 1995 movie on TV last night, "Funny bones", with most of the action in Blackpool. Indeed, several visual images satirized the tacky aspect of the town, such as the last 'o' in Blackpool, the airport sign, being off kilter. The storyline was utter nonsense and even with Jerry Lewis and Leslie Caron the film still dropped a bomb; I hung on thinking, well it can't get worse. But it did! The opening sequence of the film played no role at all in the story, other than as an excuse to introduce a raid on Fylde Mortuary to collect two severed lower limbs. What the heck was in the egg shaped objects; Chinese longevity powder? And that needs a clandestine operation? Oliver Reed's role was never clear and what happened to the detective and his two sidekicks? Anyone recall a local press hulabaloo at having famous past stars visiting the town? Must have been almost the event of the century! Don't worry, my grandaughter lives in Blackpool, so my comments are not derogatory, just objective.
Martinhmmm might be worth watching Bill... I don't recall the film. Does anyone know of any other films that were filmed locally? I now about one at Park Hall.
rocketmanjohnJames Bond's 'Live and Let Die' was filmed locally to me, and in the Bahamas. The boat chases were filmed on Bayou Bonfouca, about half a mile from here. I visit it often to watch the wildlife [alligators, snakes, pelicans, and a host of others]. The continuety [where is the damn spellcheck] is a bit off in the movie, one minute Bond is blasting down Bayou Bonfouca, the cops say he's heading for Irish Bayou, omitting the five mile lake and two bridges in between. Sorry, thats not local to Leyland. John
Lady GriffinDidn't Wifred Hyde White play the part of the murderer in the old Agatha Christie filmed story of Ten Little ******* before it was re-named And Then There Were None.He sat overlooking the beach at the end when they were nearly all ten dead and it was him cos he pretended to be shot earlier on but he wasn't. Sorry if you see this film cos I spoiled the ending. He dunnit. Maybe it was him-a long time ago though. If not sorry. He made a lot of films.I do remember his hair and sharp nose.
Lady GriffinMaybe it was C Aubrey Smith -same era LG
Bill RigbyLittle later than C.Aubrey Smith! Hyde White played in the comedies of the late 1950s, early 60s with Terry-Thomas and similar. He starred in a big TV law series in the US and made a few movies. The only "Ten Little "Indians" movie I recall was with Barry Fitzgerald as the killer who planned it all.
MartinI think that film has been remade a couple of times. Maybe with slightly different titles.
Lady GriffinAbsolutely right .Barry Fitzgerald it was.
Bill RigbySaw an quite original movie last night on TV - but not a TV movie! - with the amazing Emily Watson. The title "Trixie" is her role as a rather dim security guard who attempts to solve a murder that isn't until almost the end when she accuses the wrong person. The dialog is very amusing because she mixes her metaphors constantly such as "Seize the bull by the tail and look him straight in the eye" or "You can't just go to Bolivia!" for oblivion. Film made in 2000 in Canada, but the producer was Robert Altman and the movie had some of his masterly touches. Anyone heard of this movie or perhaps seen it?
Bill RigbyI see "L'Homme du Train" is playing in Preston. Excellent movie, even if the ending is a little bizarre and much too 'metaphysical'. Jean Rochefort is one of the great movie actors and it was strange to see him paired with Johnny Hallyday, the French "Elvis" (though weathering much better!) Rochefort played a memorable performance in "The Hairdressers Husband". Saw "Priest" last night on TV; a BBC film with Tom Wilkinson and a cracker it is, even if almost 10 years old. Very uptodate topically, since the RC Bishop of Phoenix has been lucky to escape criminal charges based on his covering up several priests accused of molesting boys. Then just as the furore dies down from local front page news, he runs over a man and flees the site of the accident, leaving the injured party to die! One cannot help but feel sorry for the man; he probably panicked and foolishly figured he could get away with it. The accident I mean; he did get away with the initial issue!
Lady GriffinThe NZ film you are thinking of Bill is probably 'Heavenly Creatures' directed by Peter Jackson some years ago now-based on the true story of two girls Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker-their obsessive and unhealthy relationship- and their parts in the murder of Parker's mother in Christchurch. It was a notorious case and well known in UK before I left in the late 50's and the story was resurrected by this film. Parker evidently lives in NZ and Hulme is a well known crime writer. She was traced in UK when the film came out. The Maori one could have been Once Were Warriors. Film making has come a long way here in a relatively short time helped by productions like The Rings and Xena Warrior Princess etc. Funding is a problem as everywhere. LG
Lady GriffinJust watched an afternoon movie and no I have nothing better to do today. Maureen O'Hara-yes she of The Quiet Man fame-must be nearly 90-in a tearjerker called The Last Dance- YEAR 2000. Romantic weepie about an ageing and ailing teacher and the long gone man in her life and their final last dance. I wept buckets-means it must have been a good film. She still has an Irish accent. LG
Lady GriffinI've decided you should never watch weepies or horror films on your own. LG I always covered my eyes in horror films and they were quite tame films really.Like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde-changes faces behind a desk so you didn't see anything anyway. Today it's all blood soaked axes and body bits.Nothing left to the imagination. LG
noelYou know Linda LG I never watch films where gratuitous violence takes place. This excludes many American films ( can't bear the accents anyway) and the types of film I am left able to watch are something like Noddy and Big Ears The Sequel. Ah well pacifism is deeply rooted inside me.
Lady GriffinGood for you Noel I hate violence too. Some of the films now are sick .And I refuse to watch Silence of the Lambs type stuff. I don't care how technically clever it is. LG
Lady GriffinWent to the local shopping centre today and saw two American artists completing a huge sand sculpture of Hogwarts Castle.Seems a new Harry Potter book is being released and it was a kind of publicity. Haven't read any of the books but the kids love them. LG
Lady GriffinAccording to the local news thousands of the new Harry Potter book are being released tomorrow morning. It will be horrendous at the shops. The last time I think there was a stampede there was when teletubbies went on sale and everybody wanted Lala. LG
noelI saw JKR and her hubby on the news last night. He looks exactly like the character Harry Potter ( but older obviously) I have read the books but agree with those who say they are children's books really and will not buy the latest one. What's all the fuss about?
