| robot1002 | You will be forgiven for thinking that the title of this was copied from just above (font sizes).Well let me explain.
A film was made,in Leyland in about 1950/1952,or so,and the topic was The Roman Empire. My school St Marys, under the leadership of Mr Coffee, was involved in this production which also involved all the schools in Leyland. There was I huge procesion through the town, and on to Worden Park. I was dressed as a Roman soldier and my helmet was a swimming hat painted silver. We had spent months making the outfits, and farm carts were borrowed to turn them into chariots. The entire event was filmed and shown at local cinemas, some weeks later.I have seen it on tv some years ago (or part of it)and wonder if any one remembers it. It was NOT the leyland festival that is for sure. A lot of you out there may be film stars and not know it, not to mension the unpaid royalties. Swords were made of wood at woodwork lessons the girls made the tunics,at sewing class etc.this must be a part of Leyland heratage, and shown on TV again I think. Lets have your views on this one please. Tony Dilworth.

Before my time I'm afraid, but sounds interesting. Any records at St Mary's (or any of the other schools) of the event such as who was the film maker, organiser, etc?

| robot1002 | Got that last bit wrong John, I posted yor reply to me ,sorry. I am sure if I try and do a bit of research into this ,I may come up with something. I have remembered that it was named "The Leyland Pagent".
My most vivid memory of it was riding in a Roman (chariot) back from Worden Park.At great speed,to St Marys (Golden Hill) with a school friend Anthony Walmsley,The (Chariot) or cart as it was, had been borrowed from a relation of his.We where the real thing for all intents and purposes.ROMANS.....In full charge.Let's see if we can muster some interest in this, and see what happens. | Lady Griffin | There was a type of pageant that I can remember but the year escapes me.We did parade through Leyland and yes there was a film made but was it all Roman theme or a mixture.
Three of my friends and I were dressed as Edwardian ladies with laced bodices ,long skirts and posh hats.As far as I can recall we rode in a horse drawn carriage.
It must have been about 1950.
Missed out on the exciting Roman bits. That would have been something.
The only other event I can remember must have been to celebrate the end of the war maybe held in 1946 at the time of the victory parade in London.
I remember being part of mass country dancing and lots of patriotic singing.Rule Britannia ,Jerusalem etc .Oodles of Pomp and Circumstance.
Hope you unravel it all.Cheers.

| Martin | I don't think the Tescos topic has moved, it could be older then your preferences will show... I'll see if I can dig it out.
